Pedro Duarte's involvement in the growth of jiu-jitsu in the United Arab Emirates traces back to the early 2000s, when a program was established to connect Brazilian Top Team (BTT) black belt instructors with promoters of the sport in the UAE. Duarte had already built a personal connection to Abu Dhabi through competition, having participated in the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship held there in 1999. Those early ties to the UAE continued to bear fruit over the following decade, culminating in Duarte taking on an organisational role for the 2009 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship finals held in Barcelona.
Despite these deepening ties, the demands of his workload delayed Duarte's full-time commitment to the UAE's jiu-jitsu development for a number of years. That changed in 2013, when Lubomir Guedjev, one of the managers of Palm Sports, extended an invitation for Duarte to join the organisation following a formal interview process. Palm Sports stands as one of the most influential entities in combat sports, holding stakes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and numerous major sporting organisations, and serving as the management body behind the growth of jiu-jitsu in the UAE.
Duarte's integration into the Palm Sports team marked a natural evolution of a relationship built over more than a decade. His deep technical background, his experience developing the sport across Europe, and his longstanding connections to the highest levels of international grappling administration reinforced the organisation's commitment to elevating jiu-jitsu on the world stage.
