Leo Arruda

Leo Arruda was born on September 29, 1977, in São Paulo, Brazil, and stepped onto the mats at just six years old through Judo — a discipline that instilled in him the foundational principles of balance, leverage, and body control that would define his entire athletic career.

At age 10, Arruda shifted his focus to Aikido, committing to the art with exceptional depth and longevity. His dedication culminated in a 2nd Dan black belt, a rank that reflects far more than time served — it speaks to a genuine mastery of body mechanics, spatial awareness, and technical precision. These attributes would later distinguish his approach to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, making his Aikido background not a footnote but a foundational chapter in his development as both a competitor and instructor.

Despite growing up in São Paulo with an awareness of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Arruda's deep immersion in Aikido left little space for other disciplines. At age 19, a close friend who had begun exploring grappling extended an invitation to visit a local gym — and that single session proved decisive.

Arruda attended one class at Luis Guilherme's gym and signed up the very next day. Training under Luis Guilherme — the former world BJJ champion widely known as "Guigo" — Arruda brought the same disciplined work ethic that had driven him to elite-level Aikido. His dual black belt background gave him a rare perspective on movement, control, and the relationship between upright and ground-based martial arts, setting him apart from peers who had come to grappling by a more conventional path.

After years of dedicated training within the Guigo Jiu Jitsu system, Arruda earned his BJJ black belt in 2006 — completing a journey that had carried him from childhood Judo classes through elite Aikido and into one of the most technically demanding grappling arts in the world.

Building Programs Abroad

Shortly after receiving his black belt in 2006, Arruda launched an international coaching career that would span multiple continents. His first stop was the Kingdom of Bahrain, where he joined the Bahrain Jiu Jitsu Academy as a coach. Though his tenure lasted only a few months, his technical contributions produced immediate results — the academy earned a 3rd-place team finish at the Abu Dhabi Jiu Jitsu Cup, one of the region's premier competitions.

Establishing Arruda BJJ in Australia

In 2007, Arruda accepted an invitation to relocate to Adelaide, Australia, extending his reach into the Southern Hemisphere. There, he founded Arruda BJJ, established specifically to represent Guigo Jiu Jitsu on Australian soil. The team became a meaningful outpost for the Guigo lineage at a time when BJJ in Australia was still developing its competitive infrastructure. Arruda's trajectory — from São Paulo to the Middle East to Australia — reflects a personal commitment to spreading Jiu-Jitsu globally and a willingness to build competitive programs from the ground up in unfamiliar environments.

Dominance on the Brazilian Circuit

Arruda competed in the Peso Leve division (76kg/167lbs), a weight class in which he demonstrated remarkable consistency across multiple decades and organizations. His early results in São Paulo established him as a credible force on the Brazilian circuit well before he took his career international — capturing three São Paulo State Championship titles in 2002, 2004, and 2006 under the FPJJ banner, along with the São Paulo State Open Weight Championship in 2004 via the FESP. He also claimed the 'Circuito Aberto Paulista' in 2001, rounding out a comprehensive domestic résumé.

International Titles and World-Class Consistency

Arruda's international record came into sharp focus following his move abroad. He won the CBJJE World Cup twice — in 2007 and again in the Master division in 2010 — demonstrating that his competitive edge remained intact with the passage of time. His most significant international achievements came at the Pan Pacific Championship, where he claimed back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009, confirming his standing as a legitimate world-class competitor operating well outside the Brazilian circuit. He also secured the World Pro Cup Trials Championship in Sydney, adding further weight to an already extensive international record.
