Helder José Rodrigues Junior

Helder José Rodrigues Júnior was born on July 24, 2001, in Brazil, and spent much of his early youth leading a sedentary lifestyle before discovering Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 14. That transition to the mats proved to be a defining turning point, channeling his energy into a discipline that would eventually carry him to the top of the sport's competitive ladder.

Helder's first steps in BJJ came under a coach known as Tales, who introduced him to the fundamentals of the art. He later progressed to train under Leandro Carrilho, who recognized his development and awarded him his blue belt. Even in those early stages, Helder made his presence felt on the competition floor, earning back-to-back podium finishes at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 2017 and 2018, and a bronze medal at the IBJJF World Championship in 2018 — clear signals that a serious competitive career was taking shape.

Helder's path to the black belt was defined by a series of formative relationships with coaches and academies that each left a distinct mark on his game. After receiving his blue belt from Leandro Carrilho, he joined Paulo Rezende's squad in 2018 — a move that proved instrumental in his growth as a competitor. Under Rezende's guidance, Helder earned both his purple and brown belt promotions, building the technical foundation and competitive mindset that would come to define his style.

Prior to his black belt promotion, Helder also spent time training with Dream Art, broadening his exposure to high-level instruction before ultimately transitioning to Fratres. The culmination of his colored belt journey came in June 2023, when Rider Zuchi and Daniel Affini promoted him to black belt following a dominant North American campaign. That promotion was earned on the back of one of the most complete colored belt résumés of his generation — most notably capped by a gold medal at the IBJJF World Championship as a brown belt in 2023. The winding path from Tales to Carrilho, from Rezende to his eventual black belt promoters, reflects the diverse and rigorous journey Helder undertook to reach the pro division.

Across his blue, purple, and brown belt years, Helder "Tropeço" established himself as one of the most consistent and decorated competitors on the IBJJF and AJP colored belt circuits. His blue belt tenure produced an international title at the 2020 IBJJF European Open and a runner-up finish at the IBJJF World Championship in 2019, demonstrating early that he could perform under the brightest lights in the sport.

At purple belt, he returned to the IBJJF World Championship in 2021 and claimed a bronze medal, extending his streak of podium appearances at the sport's most prestigious event. It was at brown belt, however, that Helder truly announced himself as an elite prospect. He captured gold at the IBJJF World Championship in 2023, the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 2022, and a trio of AJP Grand Slam titles — in London, Miami, and Abu Dhabi — across 2022 and 2023. He also added a runner-up finish at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 2022 and a bronze in 2023, illustrating a level of consistency across multiple competitive platforms that is rare even among top-tier prospects.

This sustained dominance across three belt levels and multiple international circuits made a compelling case for his accelerated promotion to the black belt pro division, which materialized in June 2023.

Helder "Tropeço" competes in the Pesadíssimo division (+100.50 kg / +222.0 lbs), one of the most physically demanding weight classes in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where size and technical precision must coexist at an exceptionally high level. His transition to black belt competition was immediate and impactful, wasting no time in validating his colored belt pedigree against the sport's elite.

In his debut black belt season in 2023, Helder claimed gold at the 2023 IBJJF South American Championship, establishing himself as a force among the division's professional competitors. He carried that momentum into 2024, adding titles at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals, the 2024 IBJJF American Nationals, and the ADCC Las Vegas Open — building a résumé that spans both the IBJJF and ADCC circuits in a remarkably short window. Competing under the Fratres banner, Helder represents a new generation of elite Brazilian super-heavyweights whose technical polish, forged through years of high-level colored belt competition, translates directly into success against the world's best black belts.
