Heather Raftery

Heather Raftery was born on April 22, 1986, in Tucson, Arizona, and came of age on a series of ranches scattered across Southern Arizona. Her father's dual vocation as a horse trainer and professional bull-rider shaped her upbringing, instilling an early familiarity with athletic discipline, competitive pressure, and the demands of performing at a high level.

At 12, Raftery began competing in cutting horse competitions on the national circuit — a technically demanding equestrian discipline in which horse and rider work in tandem to separate a single cow from a herd. She competed at the national level for nearly a decade, culminating in a World Championship title in cutting in 2006 at the age of 21. Reaching the pinnacle of a physically and technically rigorous sport at such a young age proved formative, providing the competitive foundation and mental resilience she later brought to Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Following her years as an elite equestrian competitor, Raftery transitioned away from the ranch circuit after graduating from college, redirecting her athletic focus toward martial arts at the age of 22.

Raftery's path through the belt ranks of Brazilian jiu-jitsu was shaped by geographic movement, academic commitments, and a series of influential instructors who each left a distinct mark on her development as a grappler.

Blue Belt: Foundations in Tucson

She began her martial arts training at the Undisputed gym in Tucson, Arizona, training Thai boxing and jiu-jitsu concurrently. It was there that Josh Hinger awarded her the blue belt — her first formal rank in the sport. The dual background in striking and grappling established a well-rounded base from which her jiu-jitsu would grow.

Purple Belt: Denver and Graduate School

Raftery later relocated to Denver to pursue graduate school, training at Kataro Jiu-Jitsu and Factory X under Steve Hordinski and JJ Pugsley — two instructors who contributed meaningfully to her technical evolution through the purple belt stage.

Brown Belt: Training Under Cyborg

A pivotal chapter in her progression came when she traveled to Miami to train under Roberto Abreu, widely known as Cyborg. Absorbing his distinctive approach to grappling as a purple belt, she developed rapidly under his guidance. Abreu recognized her readiness and awarded her the brown belt — a milestone that coincided with some of her most prominent early competition results.

Black Belt: Atos and André Galvão

The final stage of her colored belt journey brought her to Atos BJJ in San Diego, where she trained under André Galvão, one of the most decorated figures in the sport. Galvão awarded Raftery her black belt in June 2017, formalizing her place among the elite. Throughout her entire colored belt career, Raftery balanced her training and competition schedule with full-time employment — a fact that makes her technical advancement and competitive results all the more remarkable.

Few figures in competitive Brazilian jiu-jitsu have pursued elite performance under circumstances as unconventional as those of Heather Raftery. Her nickname, "Jiu-Jitsu Gypsy," speaks directly to the nature of her journey through the sport.

For much of her BJJ career, Raftery lived and traveled out of a 1970 Volkswagen camper van, crisscrossing the United States to train, compete, and work. Rather than the structured environment of a full-time academy athlete — with daily high-level training partners, institutional support, and a stable home base — she built her game on the road, finding quality instruction and mat time wherever her travels took her. She maintained full-time employment throughout this period, competing at the highest levels of the IBJJF circuit without the resources typically associated with elite-level performance.

The pinnacle of this era came in 2016, when Raftery captured the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi title at brown belt — a world title earned while living out of a van and holding down full-time work. The result underscored both the depth of her technical preparation and the competitive drive that had defined her since her years on the cutting horse circuit.

This nomadic chapter came to a close in 2019, when Raftery relocated to Tucson, Arizona, establishing a more settled base of operations. Her story stands as a compelling testament to the idea that world-class results in jiu-jitsu are not confined to full-time academy athletes — and the "Jiu-Jitsu Gypsy" identity remains an enduring part of how her career is remembered.

Heather Raftery established herself as one of the most consistent no-gi competitors of her generation on the IBJJF circuit, building a podium record across multiple belt levels that reflected her technical reliability and commitment to performing at the sport's highest-profile events.

Colored Belt Dominance

Raftery's reputation as a no-gi specialist was cemented during her brown belt years. She reached the final of the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi in 2014 at purple belt and again in 2015 at brown belt, before claiming the title outright in 2016 — the high point of her colored belt career. That same year, she also placed at the IBJJF World Master Championship. In 2015, she added the IBJJF Pan Championship No-Gi title at brown belt to her résumé, demonstrating her dominance across the major tournaments of the no-gi calendar.

Black Belt Results

After receiving her black belt from André Galvão in June 2017, Raftery continued to perform at an elite level in the open division. She reached the final of the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi at black belt in both 2017 and 2019 — back-to-back silver medal performances that confirmed her standing among the best in her weight class. In 2019, she also reached the final of the IBJJF World Master Championship and collected gold at the 2019 IBJJF Las Vegas Open No-Gi and the 2019 IBJJF Austin Summer Open No-Gi, capping a productive season on the regional circuit.

Raftery competes in the Peso Pena (featherweight) division at 129 lbs, representing Atos BJJ in all IBJJF competition.
