Gabriel Volante

Gabriel Volante was born on August 11, 1992, in Florianópolis, the capital of Santa Catarina state in southern Brazil. Raised in a sports-oriented household, he gravitated naturally toward football (soccer), developing his skills to the point where a professional career felt like a realistic path. Combat sports were not entirely absent from his upbringing — capoeira featured in his early years, and karate held a meaningful place in the home through his father, who practiced the discipline extensively. Despite this exposure, grappling arts remained peripheral to Gabriel's primary athletic ambitions.

Jiu-jitsu entered Gabriel's life indirectly, through his younger brother's involvement in the martial art. Though the discipline sparked his curiosity, a practical concern kept him at a distance: the fear that grappling training could produce an injury that would derail his football career. That hesitation held for several years before Gabriel finally stepped onto the mats for the first time in 2009, at the age of 17. His first instructor was Everson Ávila, known as Maromba, who laid the foundational groundwork for Gabriel's technical development and guided his early steps as a competitor.

Gabriel's progression through the belt ranks reflected both his athletic background and his deepening commitment to jiu-jitsu as a serious competitive pursuit. By purple belt, he had adopted a full-time training regime, channeling the same intensity he had once dedicated to football. Training full-time in Florianópolis, however, presented a structural ceiling: the city, while active in Brazilian BJJ culture, lacked the competitive infrastructure that elite-level ambitions demand.

Recognizing this gap, Gabriel made a deliberate move at brown belt — relocating to São Paulo, Brazil's most competitive and resource-rich BJJ environment. There, he joined XCoach under the guidance of Celso Venicius, widely known as Celsinho. The move proved transformative, embedding Gabriel within a training culture calibrated for elite competition and providing the coaching and sparring environment needed to sharpen his game. On June 29, 2019, Celsinho Venicius promoted Gabriel Volante to the rank of black belt — formalizing a journey that had carried him from a football-focused teenager in Florianópolis to one of the competitive heavyweights emerging from São Paulo's demanding BJJ scene.

Immediate Impact at Black Belt

Gabriel Volante wasted little time establishing himself at the black belt level. In 2019, he claimed gold at the IBJJF Curitiba Spring Open in the absolute division, then backed it up with another first-place finish at the IBJJF São Paulo Open — demonstrating that the step up in division had done nothing to blunt his competitive edge. Later that year, he reached the podium at the IBJJF South American Championship with a second-place finish, a result that affirmed his standing within one of South America's most fiercely contested regional tournaments.

Sustained Excellence and National Recognition

Gabriel's competitive relevance extended well beyond his debut year at black belt. In 2023, he returned to the podium at the IBJJF Floripa Fall Open, earning second place in both the weight and absolute divisions — a double performance that underscored his durability and continued presence at the top of the Peso Pesado (94kg/207lbs) bracket. That same year, he added a third-place finish at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals, one of the most prestigious domestic competitions in jiu-jitsu, further cementing his reputation among Brazil's elite heavyweights. Competing under the Brazilian flag and representing XCoach, Gabriel Volante's black belt record stands as a testament to the sacrifices made during his years of development — from a late start in Florianópolis to consistent podium finishes on the national and continental stage.
