Caio Paganini was born on June 13, 1991, in São Paulo, Brazil, into a family with deep ties to the grappling world — his brother Rafael Paganini would go on to become a prominent figure in competitive grappling in his own right. As a child, Caio explored judo, capoeira, and kung fu, though he approached each discipline casually rather than with serious athletic intent. None of these pursuits took lasting hold, and as academic demands mounted during his college years, he drifted away from physical training altogether.

The turning point came at age 18, when Paganini resolved to return to some form of physical discipline. He began with boxing at a local gym, but a chance observation changed everything: watching a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt move through techniques on the adjacent mats, something clicked. Paganini abandoned boxing almost immediately and set out to find a grappling academy — a decision that would define the entire trajectory of his athletic life.

Building the Foundation at Cia Paulista

Paganini's formal jiu-jitsu education began at Cia Paulista, where coaches Max Trombini and Eduardo Leitão guided him from his first days on the mats through the purple belt. Their instruction established the technical foundation that would underpin his later success. As Paganini neared the end of his college studies, however, he faced a defining crossroads: pursue a conventional corporate career or commit fully to professional competition. He chose the mats.

Joining Alliance and Breaking Through

To compete at the highest level, Paganini moved to Alliance headquarters in São Paulo, training under Fábio Gurgel and Michael Langhi. The move paid immediate dividends. Just one year into his time with Alliance, and at only 24 years old, Paganini entered the 2015 CBJJ Brazilian Nationals at purple belt in the heavyweight division and took gold — finishing alongside Alliance teammate Nicholas Meregali. That same year, he added the IBJJF South American Championship title at purple belt, confirming that the Alliance environment had accelerated his development on every level. Paganini has pointed to the 2015 Brazilian Nationals as the pivotal moment that validated his decision to pursue jiu-jitsu professionally.

Brown Belt Consistency and the Path to Black

His brown belt years brought continued refinement and steady podium performances. Paganini placed at the IBJJF São Paulo BJJ Pro in 2016 and reached the podium at the IBJJF São Paulo Open in 2017, demonstrating that his purple belt results were no anomaly. In June 2019, following a strong and consistent brown belt career, Fábio Gurgel awarded Paganini his black belt — the formal recognition of a journey that had begun with a single glance across a boxing gym floor.

A Finisher's Philosophy

Caio Paganini has built a reputation as one of the most submission-oriented competitors in jiu-jitsu, defined by an unwavering commitment to finishing fights rather than accumulating points or advantages. Paganini claimed gold at the 2019 IBJJF Charlotte Open and the 2019 IBJJF BH Winter Open, while also reaching the podium at the IBJJF South American Championship and the IBJJF São Paulo Open. Competing in the Pesado (heavyweight) division at 94.3 kg / 208 lbs, Paganini combines the physicality to compete with the division's biggest athletes and the technical aggression to threaten submissions against its most skilled.
