Nick Schrock

Nick Schrock was born on August 16, 1989, in the United States, and built his early athletic identity on the football field. Competing as a linebacker throughout high school, Schrock developed the physicality, spatial awareness, and reactive instincts that define the position — attributes that would translate seamlessly to the demands of grappling. At 19, during a school break, he encountered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu entirely by chance. With no prior knowledge of the martial art, he made a spontaneous decision to step onto the mat for a single class. That session took place at JW Wright's academy — a choice that would permanently alter the course of his athletic life.

From his first class onward, Nick Schrock trained exclusively under JW Wright, building his entire BJJ foundation within a single lineage. His progression through the belt system was notably swift, driven by a combination of natural athleticism, competitive hunger, and disciplined consistency on the mat.

Schrock established himself as one of the premier lower-belt competitors of his generation. He captured IBJJF Pan Championship gold at blue belt in 2011 and IBJJF World Championship gold at purple belt in 2013. He carried that momentum into brown belt, winning IBJJF Pan Championship No-Gi gold in 2015 and earning additional podium finishes at the Pan Championship that same year and into 2016. In July 2016, JW Wright awarded Schrock his black belt — a formal recognition of both his technical development and an extensive competitive record built across the lower divisions.

One of the most distinctive elements of Nick Schrock's competitive identity is a throwing ability developed outside any formal judo program. At JW Wright's academy, Schrock befriended a judo black belt — known within the gym as "Judo Blair" — who trained alongside the BJJ students. Before and after regular class sessions, Judo Blair passed on his knowledge of stand-up mechanics and throwing technique in informal mentorship sessions that, though brief, left a lasting imprint on Schrock's game.

Despite never training at a formal judo club, Schrock went on to earn recognition within the BJJ community as one of the sport's most capable throwing practitioners. This reputation became closely tied to his nickname "Moose" and defined a competitive style built around controlling engagements from the opening exchange — an edge that consistently separated him from opponents less comfortable in the stand-up phase.

In September 2016, a few months after receiving his black belt, Nick Schrock relocated to North San Diego, California, to take a position at a business development start-up. The move opened an unexpected door in his grappling career: direct access to Saulo Ribeiro and Xande Ribeiro at the University of Jiu-Jitsu academy.

Immersed in a training environment shaped by two of the most accomplished competitors and instructors in the sport's history, Schrock deepened and sharpened his technical game at the black belt level. Working extensively with both brothers refined his positional understanding, elevated the precision of his transitions, and cemented his affiliation with Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu. The results that followed on the black belt competition circuit reflected the quality of that collaboration.

Nick Schrock made an immediate impact on the black belt scene following his promotion in mid-2016. Within his first months competing at the highest level, he captured gold at the IBJJF Long Beach Open and reached the finals of both the IBJJF Chicago Summer Open and the IBJJF Los Angeles Pro. Competing in the Peso Pesado division at 94.30 kg (208.0 lbs), he demonstrated the ability to perform across gi and no-gi formats with equal effectiveness.

In 2017, Schrock reached the finals of the ADCC US West Coast Trials and the FIVE Grappling Super League, reinforcing his relevance in submission grappling alongside traditional gi competition. He also claimed third place at the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi in 2016. The capstone of his black belt career arrived in 2019, when Schrock won gold at the IBJJF Masters World Championship — a result that marked the full maturation of the competitor who had first walked into a BJJ gym at 19 with no idea what jiu-jitsu was.
