Jesse Urholin

Born on May 18, 1989, in Finland, Jesse Urholin spent his formative years as a competitive football (soccer) player before the grappling arts claimed his full attention. As a teenager, a deep fascination with action films sparked an interest in martial arts that would ultimately define his athletic identity. Alongside his brother Riku Urholin, Jesse channeled that enthusiasm into taekwondo, training together at a local school for approximately one year. While taekwondo instilled discipline and a foundation in striking, it was Brazilian jiu-jitsu that truly captured Jesse's imagination when he discovered it in 2008. The Urholin brothers made the transition as a unit, beginning their BJJ journey under coach Seppo Vihelä — and from his very first session on the mats, Jesse's passion for grappling was unmistakable.

Jesse Urholin's path through the BJJ belt system was methodical, marked by both interruption and resilience. Shortly after beginning his training under Seppo Vihelä, Jesse fulfilled his compulsory military service obligation, pausing his grappling education for one year. Upon returning to civilian life, he resumed training under Markku Juntunen, one of Finland's pioneering BJJ figures and an affiliate of the prestigious Alliance academy.

Juntunen guided Urholin through every stage of the belt system with precision, shaping both his technical game and competitive mindset across the years that followed. The culmination of that journey came on June 12, 2016, when Juntunen promoted Urholin to the rank of black belt — a milestone that validated years of dedication, sacrifice, and consistent performance on the competitive stage. Throughout this entire period, Urholin balanced a rigorous training schedule with a full-time career in Information Technology, a testament to the discipline and time management that define his approach to both sport and professional life.

Jesse Urholin stands as one of the finest grapplers Finland has produced, accumulating an impressive record across both gi and no-gi formats on the European and international circuits. His competitive rise first drew serious attention at the lower belt levels, highlighted by a gold medal at the IBJJF European Open Championship in 2012 at blue belt and a runner-up finish at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship that same year — results that announced the arrival of a genuine talent.

As Urholin advanced through the ranks, his performance at the sport's most prestigious events remained remarkably consistent. He earned a silver medal at the 2014 IBJJF World Championship at purple belt and followed it with another silver at the 2016 IBJJF World Championship at brown belt, demonstrating an elite-level ability to reach the final stages of the IBJJF Worlds across multiple belt divisions.

In no-gi competition, Urholin proved equally formidable. He claimed back-to-back ADCC European Trials championships in 2014 and 2016, establishing himself as the dominant force in Scandinavian no-gi grappling during that period and earning his place among the world's elite submission wrestlers. On the domestic front, 2016 represented a landmark year: Urholin swept the Finnish national championships, capturing gold in both the weight category and the absolute division in gi competition, as well as the no-gi national title. He also reached the final of the Crest Pro Fighting event that year. After earning his black belt, Urholin continued to compete at the international level, adding a third-place finish at the IBJJF European Open Championship in 2017 to a career résumé that places him among the most decorated grapplers in Finnish BJJ history.
