Diogo Almeida

Diogo Almeida was born on January 10, 1983, in Itaquera, a neighborhood on the east side of São Paulo, Brazil. Football and the rhythms of street life defined his early years — running kites with friends through the neighborhood ranked among his favorite pastimes. Martial arts held no particular appeal, and it was not a passion for combat sports but the pull of his social circle that first drew him to the mats.

In 1999, Diogo's friends began attending jiu-jitsu classes at a local social project, and rather than be left behind, he decided to give it a try toward the end of that year. The program was Cohab 2, a community-driven grappling initiative founded by Antônio Carlos Bergamo and operated by his student Everdan Olegário, widely known as Mestre Dan. Diogo stepped through those doors alongside his brothers Gustavo Almeida and Caio Almeida — three brothers entering a sport that would shape the entire course of their lives.

Cohab 2 proved to be an extraordinary incubator of talent. Beyond the Almeida brothers, the program produced a generation of elite grapplers, including Sérgio Moraes, Guilherme Augusto, and Dimitrius Souza — competitors who would go on to leave lasting marks at the highest levels of Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Teaching While Learning

As a blue belt, Almeida began teaching jiu-jitsu free of charge from his own home, offering classes to children in his neighborhood. His coaches Bergamo and Olegário offered their full support, recognizing the value and authenticity of his initiative. That commitment deepened as he advanced: upon reaching purple belt, Mestre Dan offered Almeida an official coaching position at a gym, formally launching what would become a significant career as an instructor. During those same purple belt years, Almeida co-founded the Almeida JJ association, laying the groundwork for what would eventually grow into one of São Paulo's most prominent grappling organizations.

Brown Belt Breakout and Black Belt Promotion

Almeida's competitive performances at brown belt announced him as a serious contender. In 2009, he claimed gold at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in the brown belt division and swept both the weight and absolute categories at the CBJJ Southeast Brazilian Championship. Those results set the stage for the milestone that followed: also in 2009, a full decade after first stepping onto the mats at Cohab 2, Diogo Almeida received his black belt from Mestre Dan. Sérgio Moraes, a fellow product of the same social project, attended the ceremony — making the occasion a fitting tribute to the community that had shaped them both.

The founding of Almeida JJ during Diogo's purple belt years was a natural extension of the values instilled at Cohab 2 — the conviction that jiu-jitsu could serve as a vehicle for community development as much as athletic achievement. With Diogo and his brothers Gustavo Almeida and Caio Almeida working in concert, the association expanded steadily, establishing affiliated gyms throughout São Paulo state.

Institutional Growth and Independence

In 2010, the Almeida brothers broadened their institutional ties by joining the Ryan Gracie Association, a partnership that provided additional competitive infrastructure and visibility. That affiliation lasted approximately six years, ending midway through 2016. Rather than seek a new umbrella organization, the brothers chose to operate independently — a decision that proved well-founded. Unaffiliated, they quickly consolidated their reputation and established Almeida JJ as one of the most respected and competitive teams in the state of São Paulo.

The growth of Almeida JJ reflects both competitive ambition and an enduring commitment to the community-centered ethos that defined its origins. With strong ties and affiliated gyms across São Paulo state, the association carries forward the legacy of the social project that first put Diogo and his brothers on the mats.

At the black belt level, Diogo Almeida competed primarily in the Meio Pesado (88kg/194lbs) and Pesado (94kg/207lbs) weight divisions, building a record defined by technical consistency and the ability to perform across multiple tournament formats. His most prestigious international title came in 2013, when he captured gold at the CBJJE World Championship — a result that validated his standing among the top grapplers in his weight categories.

IBJJF and CBJJ Results

Almeida's performances at IBJJF events further reinforced his competitive credentials. He won the IBJJF São Paulo Open in 2012 and returned to the final in both 2013 and 2015, demonstrating sustained excellence at the regional and national level. He earned podium finishes at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 2012 and 2015, and added a third-place finish at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals No-Gi in 2013 — confirming his competence in both gi and no-gi formats.

Longevity and Breadth on the Circuit

His tournament appearances stretched across multiple events and years. A third-place finish at the IBJJF Rio Open in 2013, a bronze at the IBJJF Rio Summer Open in 2016, and additional podium results at the CBJJ South Brazilian Championship in 2016 illustrated the longevity and reach of his competitive career. At the 2014 IBJJF São Paulo Open, Almeida reached the absolute podium, adding further dimension to an already well-rounded record.
