Rafaela Ribeiro Guedes was born on May 23, 1992, in Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state, situated on the banks of the Negro River in northwestern Brazil. Before jiu-jitsu ever entered the picture, her early athletic identity was forged on the handball court. She began competing seriously at the age of 10, pursuing the sport with genuine dedication — until a serious injury at 15 brought her tournament career to an abrupt and permanent end.

The years that followed were difficult. Stripped of the structured athletic life handball had provided, Guedes struggled with depression and weight management, a formative stretch of adversity that would ultimately redirect her toward the gentle art. During this period, she became a regular presence at local jiu-jitsu tournaments — not as a competitor, but in support of her cousins, who trained and competed in the sport. That prolonged exposure planted a seed. At 17, drawing inspiration from her cousins and motivated by a desire to reclaim purpose and physical direction, Guedes stepped onto the mats for the first time. Her introduction came through a local social project in Manaus, where she trained and earned her blue belt.

The blue belt marked the beginning of a more deliberate competitive ambition. Guedes joined the academy of coach Daílson Pinheiro in Manaus, where her love for competition took root. Pinheiro played a foundational role in shaping her early tournament identity, fueling the drive that would eventually push her beyond the borders of her home state.

At 22, Guedes made the significant decision to relocate to São Paulo, placing herself at the center of Brazil's most competitive jiu-jitsu circuit. She found a home at New School Brotherhood, one of the country's leading grappling academies, where she formed a close and consequential friendship with Luiza Monteiro — one of the team's top competitors, who later moved to the United States in 2017 to train at Atos HQ in San Diego.

By early 2018, Guedes had reached a personal crossroads. Dissatisfied with the trajectory of her career in São Paulo, she seriously considered abandoning competitive jiu-jitsu altogether in favor of a more conventional path. The turning point came at a tournament in Abu Dhabi, where a reunion with Monteiro changed everything. After hearing Guedes articulate her doubts, Monteiro urged her to come to California and train with the Atos squad. Guedes visited the San Diego headquarters that same year and was welcomed warmly by team leaders André Galvão and Angelica Galvão — a reception that convinced her to stay.

The move proved transformative. Training within one of the premier grappling environments in the world, under the direct supervision of the Galvãos, Guedes experienced a rapid and visible elevation in her game. That development was formally recognized when André Galvão awarded her the black belt in January 2019, a promotion that reflected both the quality of her progress and the confidence the Atos leadership had placed in her as an athlete.

Colored Belt Foundations

Guedes built a decorated colored belt record long before reaching the black belt division. At purple belt, she claimed gold at the UAEJJF Grand Slam in Los Angeles in 2017 and reached the podium at the IBJJF World Championship in 2016. Her brown belt campaign proved equally impressive — she captured a world title at the 2019 IBJJF World Championship, added podium finishes at the World No-Gi Championship that same year, and made a strong UAEJJF Grand Slam appearance.

Black Belt Breakthrough

The transition to black belt competition brought no loss of momentum. In 2020, Guedes claimed gold at both the IBJJF Pan Championship in the gi and the IBJJF Pan Championship No-Gi, establishing herself as a legitimate threat across disciplines. That same year she added a Fight 2 Win belt to her résumé, demonstrating her adaptability to the superfight format, while a UAEJJF Grand Slam title in Miami — spanning the brown and black belt division — further underscored the breadth of her competitive range.

The 2021 season represented a peak in her black belt career to that point. Guedes claimed the 2021 IBJJF World No-Gi Championship, one of the most prestigious titles in submission grappling, then followed with the WNO Championship title, cementing her elite standing in the increasingly prominent no-gi superfight circuit.

ADCC and the World Stage

The 2022 ADCC World Championships placed Guedes on the sport's grandest stage. She advanced through the bracket in the over-60 kg division before falling to Amy Campo in the final, finishing as runner-up at an event widely regarded as the pinnacle of no-gi competition. The result stood as a testament to how far she had traveled — from a social project in Manaus to contending for the ADCC title on a world stage.

Guedes competes in the Pesado division at 79.3 kg / 175.0 lbs, where she ranks among the most formidable competitors of her generation.

Guedes builds her game on strength, technical precision, and an exceptional capacity to prevent opponents from scoring — qualities that translate seamlessly across gi, no-gi, and superfight rulesets. Her foundation in competitive handball contributed a base of athleticism and spatial awareness that feeds directly into her positional control on the mats.

She is exceptionally hard to score on — a defensive quality that compounds her offensive effectiveness.
