Brenda Heller

Brenda Heller was born on December 5, 1995, in Brazil, into a family that placed great value on physical activity and sporting development. Her martial arts journey began at six years old with capoeira — a discipline that built her athletic foundation and sparked a competitive instinct. Her father, a strong advocate for extracurricular activities, then steered a young Brenda toward jiu-jitsu at the age of eight, expanding her horizons on the mats.

Her earliest instruction came under César Peçanha, before Alessandro Nunes and Guto Vicente took over her development, ultimately awarding her the blue belt. That promotion as a teenager marked a turning point — the moment she committed to pursuing jiu-jitsu professionally and training full time. The results arrived swiftly: back-to-back junior titles at the IBJJF Junior World Championship and the CBJJ Junior Brasileiro in 2012 announced her as one of Brazil's most promising young female grapplers. Brenda is also the sister of Vitor Freitas, a respected sports photographer within the BJJ community.

In 2014, while holding the rank of purple belt, Brenda Heller was selected to travel to Abu Dhabi as part of a landmark initiative — the integration of Brazilian jiu-jitsu into the Abu Dhabi public school curriculum. The opportunity positioned her as both an educator and a global ambassador for the sport. She taught structured grappling instruction at the Fátima Bint Mubarak School and later at the Hunain School For Girls, bringing the art to young students across the United Arab Emirates.

Heller spent approximately three years living and working in the UAE, a period that coincided with some of her strongest results at the colored belt level. In 2016, she captured gold at the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Pro Championship at purple belt, reached the podium at the IBJJF European Open, and earned a third-place finish at the IBJJF World Championship. Her time in Abu Dhabi reflected the increasingly international reach of jiu-jitsu — and her own role in carrying the sport beyond its traditional competitive circuits.

In 2017, Márcio André — Heller's partner and coach — received an invitation to lead a jiu-jitsu academy in the United States, opening the next chapter of her career. Having already built ties to the American BJJ community through competition visits to Leticia Ribeiro's South Bay academy, the transition was a natural one. The couple settled in Arizona, where Heller continued competing on the IBJJF circuit under the Gracie Humaitá / GD Jiu-Jitsu Academy banner.

Her brown belt campaign proved to be among the most prolific stretches of her career. In 2017, she claimed the IBJJF American National title and the CBJJ Brasileiro No-Gi Championship. She carried that momentum into 2018, adding the IBJJF Pan Championship and the CBJJ Brasileiro title to her résumé. In June 2018, Márcio André promoted Heller to black belt — a milestone that carried particular personal significance given his dual role as both her life partner and primary instructor. She wasted no time making her mark at the new rank, claiming the IBJJF American National Championship at black belt before the year was out.

Brenda Heller competes in the Peso Leve division (64 kg / 141.5 lbs) and represents the United States in international competition, having built her early career competing for Brazil. What distinguishes her competitive record is its consistency across multiple belt levels and competitive landscapes — from junior divisions in Brazil, to the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Pro circuit in the Middle East, to major IBJJF events across the Americas and Europe.

Her 2012 junior double — IBJJF Junior World Championship and CBJJ Junior Brasileiro — established her as a premier young talent in the women's division. She sustained that trajectory through the purple and brown belt ranks, earning podium finishes at the IBJJF World Championship, the IBJJF European Open, and the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Pro, where she claimed gold in 2016. Her brown belt run was particularly prolific, producing national, continental, and world-level titles before her step into the black belt division.
