Yuri Silva

Yuri da Silva Campos was born in September 2004 in Guarujá, a coastal town in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. His introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came at the age of 7, sparked by the influence of his uncle, a jiu-jitsu practitioner whose example set the course of Yuri's life in a profound and lasting way.

From the outset, Yuri trained under Rodrigo Menezes — known in the BJJ community as Digão — at a local academy in Guarujá. Menezes guided da Silva through every stage of his development, from his first days as a white belt through to the sport's highest rank. Competition quickly became central to Yuri's identity, the tournament circuit holding a particular draw for the young athlete. Yet the talent and enthusiasm he brought to the mats collided early with a significant obstacle: his family's limited economic resources made it difficult to sustain the entry fees and travel costs that define life as a competitive BJJ athlete.

Facing financial constraints that could have derailed his ambitions, Yuri da Silva found a characteristically determined solution — he sold water bottles on the beaches of Guarujá to self-fund his tournament participation. The image of a young competitor hustling on the seafront to pay his own way onto the competition mats speaks directly to the drive and resilience that would come to define his career.

That persistence translated into results. On the juvenile circuit, da Silva established himself as one of Brazil's most dominant young competitors, capturing gold at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 2016, 2017, and 2019. Those consecutive national titles announced him as a serious talent and drew attention beyond Brazil's borders. The Qatar-based professional team Vision took notice, offering to cover his tournament entry fees and travel expenses in exchange for representation — providing the structural support his career had previously lacked and opening the door to the international circuit.

Purple and Brown Belt Dominance

Backed by Brothers Club, Yuri da Silva stepped into the colored belt divisions and immediately competed at the highest levels of international BJJ. In 2023, competing at the purple belt level, da Silva claimed gold at the IBJJF World Championship — a landmark result that validated his ascent and placed him among the elite of his generation. That same year, he added a silver medal at the IBJJF European Championship at purple belt, underscoring his consistency across major international events.

Da Silva's momentum carried seamlessly into the brown belt division. Also in 2023, he won gold at the IBJJF South American Championship and closed out the year with a bronze medal at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals NOGI — both at brown belt. The breadth of those results, spanning gi and no-gi formats across multiple continents, reflected the completeness of his development as a competitor.

Black Belt Promotion

On June 1, 2024, Rodrigo Menezes promoted Yuri da Silva to black belt, completing a journey that had begun under the same instructor nearly two decades earlier on the mats of Guarujá. The promotion marked the formal recognition of a competitive and personal evolution shaped by sacrifice, consistency, and the steady guidance of a coach present for every step of the way.
