Defending against leg attacks when pursuing guillotines:
- Starting from a sitting guard with a full body lock, be cautious of the opponent's attempt to put hands on the ground, which can lead to a leg assault.
- When the opponent has a body lock, avoid bad footwork that can lead to being easily rolled and legs captured.
- To counter, sit back with your butt and push your chest forward to make your heels heavy, making it harder for the opponent to maintain the body lock.
- Drop your elbows to make the opponent's shoulders uncomfortable and insert your hand at their neck to initiate a throat attack.
- Pass your arm through and plank on their hip, deflecting their leg and walking your knee between their legs to force them down into a smash pass.
- Keep one elbow tight and the other high, staying head to head to maintain the smash pass position.
- Slide your knee to the opponent's hip to prevent them from getting an underhook and launching a leg lock attack.
- Be mindful of your leg positioning to avoid entanglements and protect against leg locks.
- When passing the guard, clear the opponent's feet, knees, and hip line to prevent them from initiating leg attacks.
- Practice smash-only sessions in No-Gi to focus on guard passing and body positioning without relying on submissions.
- Alternate practices between head hunting and foot locking to identify mistakes in positioning and entries.
- Use capture-equals-finish drills to highlight the importance of positioning and to understand why traps occur.
Understanding these concepts helps prevent leg lock attacks and improves overall defensive positioning when pursuing guillotines.
