Theodoro Canal

Born on April 22, 1981, in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil, Theodoro Canal found his way to the mats at the age of seven. His mother enrolled him under Master Maeda, recognizing the discipline as a healthy outlet for building fitness and forging social connections. That early start proved foundational — Canal trained consistently through his childhood, developing the habits and technical instincts that would define his later career.

At fourteen, a family relocation brought a change in training environment. Canal began working under Agnaldo Goes, adapting to a new coaching approach during one of the most formative periods in any young athlete's development. The transition demanded flexibility, and Canal embraced it, continuing to sharpen his game under fresh instruction.

Seeking higher-level training and competition, Canal made the move to Rio de Janeiro, where he joined the Carlson Gracie Team and trained under Nigue and Vinicius Amaral. He competed under the Carlson Gracie banner for four years, gaining valuable experience on the competitive circuit during a period when the team stood as one of the most respected forces in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The next major turning point came with a scholarship to Gama Filho University, one of Brazil's most recognized institutions for Physical Education. The university housed a nationally competitive BJJ program that ranked among the country's best, and Canal arrived there already holding a purple belt. Under the guidance of Master Julio Cesar Pereira, he earned his brown belt and subsequently his black belt, with the black belt promotion taking place in 2003.

When Gama Filho University later discontinued its BJJ program, the team's identity endured. Those athletes and coaches went on to form GF Team (Grapple Fight Team), with Julio Cesar Pereira at its core. Canal remained affiliated with that lineage and holds the rank of 4th degree black belt under Julio Cesar Pereira.

Open-Class Results

Following his black belt promotion in 2003, Theodoro Canal established himself as a consistent and formidable presence across major international competitions. Competing at Peso Pena (70 kg / 154 lbs), he appeared regularly on the podium at prestigious events including the IBJJF World Championship, the Pan Americans, and the World Cup — demonstrating his competitive range across multiple formats and organizations.

At the elite open level, Canal proved his quality against the top competitors of his era. He earned a bronze medal at the 2008 IBJJF World Championship and collected multiple Pan American bronze medals, including finishes in 2007 and 2010. On the team competition front, GF Team finished as runner-up at the 2008 Brazilian Teams Championship, with Check Mat claiming first place that year. Some sources attribute a team title to GF Team at the 2009 Brazilian Teams Championship, though this claim has not been confirmed through official records and warrants verification before being accepted as established fact.

Masters Division Titles

Canal's most concentrated success came in the Masters division, where he emerged as a dominant figure in the early 2010s. He captured the Pan American Championship in the Masters division on multiple occasions — claiming both the weight and open weight titles in 2011, then adding another Pan American Masters title in 2012. His 2011 Internacional Masters and Seniors Championship victory further cemented his standing as one of the premier competitors in his age category, while his 2010 World Cup title under the CBJJO banner added another major accolade to an already decorated record.
