Janni Larsson

Janni Larsson was born on August 19, 1987, in Kristinehamn, Sweden, and relocated to Jönköping at the age of 14. Her path to the mats began around 2005 through an unlikely catalyst: a school policy mandating physical exercise for students. That requirement led her to JJK Samurai, where she began formal training under instructor Paul Persson with an initial focus on Ju-Jutsu.

Rather than confining herself to a single discipline, Larsson expanded her foundation to include Judo and kickboxing — building a well-rounded combat sports base that would inform her technical development for years to come. Her competitive instincts surfaced quickly, and she went on to represent Sweden in a team competition against Denmark, a detail that takes on added significance given that Denmark would later become her competitive home.

Finding BJJ and Establishing a New Base

Larsson's pivot to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came in 2007, marking a defining shift in her martial arts trajectory. In 2010, she relocated to Denmark to pursue a medical degree at the University of Copenhagen — a move that also opened a new chapter in her BJJ development. She joined Arte Suave Academy, a Checkmat affiliate, and began training under Shimon Mochizuki, who would become the central figure in her competitive rise.

Building an International Title Portfolio

Her international breakthrough arrived in 2011, when she claimed gold at the European trials for the World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship — her first international title and an early signal of her competitive ceiling. Larsson built steadily on that momentum, winning the European Championship at purple belt in 2012 in both the weight and absolute divisions. At brown belt in 2013, she continued her ascent, capturing gold at both the Pan American Championship and the European Championship, while adding a silver medal in the Pan American absolute division in the same year.

Black Belt and World Titles

On August 17, 2013, Shimon Mochizuki awarded Larsson her black belt — a recognition of years of disciplined, methodical progression through the ranks. Competing in the Peso Médio division (69kg/152lbs) and representing Denmark internationally despite her Swedish origins, she carried that momentum into the black belt division with remarkable immediacy. In 2014, she claimed both the World Championship and the World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship titles, cementing her place among the elite competitors of her generation.

One of the most compelling dimensions of Larsson's career is the sustained dual commitment she maintained between elite athletic competition and medical education.
