Marco Canha

Marco Canha was born on January 25, 1982, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and encountered martial arts at an unusually young age. His earliest exposure came through Judo, which he began practicing as a toddler — a foundation that sharpened his physical development and seeded the technical instincts he would later refine on the BJJ mats. For years, however, martial arts remained a background presence rather than a defining pursuit.

That changed the moment Canha witnessed Royce Gracie dominate the first UFC event. Watching a BJJ practitioner systematically dismantle larger, differently trained opponents was transformative — it crystallized a sense of purpose that set him on a clear path. In 1994, at twelve years old, Canha began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at a local academy in Rio de Janeiro. The sport that would come to define his life had found him.

Canha's rise through the belt ranks was shaped by a remarkable succession of high-caliber coaches, each leaving a distinct imprint on his game.

Early Foundations: Carlson Gracie Lineage

His first instructors were Murilo Bustamante and Sergio 'Bolao', both black belts under Carlson Gracie, training at an academy close to his home. Though his time under their direct guidance was relatively brief, it gave Canha early exposure to the technical richness and competitive culture of the Carlson Gracie system — an influence that would remain embedded in his approach to grappling.

Developing Through the Ranks

Canha subsequently moved to train under Roberto Traven, forming a sustained and productive relationship that carried him from Yellow Belt through to Blue Belt. Traven provided the continuity and structure that formative competitive years demand. When Traven relocated to Australia, Canha transitioned to Muzio de Angelis, who awarded him his Purple Belt. De Angelis proved to be more than a technical instructor — he actively championed Canha's potential and encouraged him to pursue a professional career in Jiu-Jitsu, mentorship that proved pivotal at a critical juncture.

Black Belt Under Ricardo Vieira

The final stage of Canha's belt progression brought him to Ricardo Vieira and the renowned Fight Zone Academy in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. Training at one of Brazil's most respected academies, Canha refined his skills under Vieira's tutelage and received his Black Belt in 2008. His debut as a black belt was immediate and telling: without having competed at Brown Belt, he entered the Rio de Janeiro State Championship and claimed 3rd place in the Open Weight Division — a strong result on one of the most competitive regional circuits in the world.

In 2010, Marco Canha relocated from Rio de Janeiro to London, United Kingdom, launching a new chapter both personally and professionally. He took on the role of head Jiu-Jitsu coach at London Fight Factory, bringing with him the depth of technical knowledge accumulated across more than fifteen years of training under elite Brazilian instructors.

Canha's impact on the UK BJJ scene became tangible in 2011, when he awarded his first black belts — to Keith Mckenzie and Andre Borges — marking the first fruits of his coaching lineage on British soil. In December 2012, he founded his own martial arts gym, Fightzone London, establishing it as a direct affiliate of the Fightzone Academy in Rio de Janeiro and preserving a formal connection to his competitive roots in Brazil. Throughout his competitive career in the United Kingdom, Canha represented Checkmat and Fightzone London, affiliations that reflected both his professional network and his identity as a coach and competitor.

Canha's competitive career in Europe demonstrated that his technical development continued well beyond his transition into coaching. Competing in the Lightweight division (76kg / 167lbs), he built a consistent and decorated record across the European and international circuit, particularly as he progressed into the Master divisions.

Early European Results

His early years in the UK produced a silver medal at the IBJJF European No-Gi Open in 2012 and a runner-up finish at the IBJJF London Open the same year — results that confirmed he remained a serious competitive threat despite the demands of establishing a new gym.

Peak European Success

By 2013 and 2014, Canha elevated his results further, winning gold at both the IBJJF London Open and the IBJJF London No-Gi Open in the Master 1 category, and claiming the UKBJJA British Open title in 2014. In 2018, he enjoyed a particularly productive stretch, taking gold at the IBJJF London Fall Open, the IBJJF Dublin Open, and the IBJJF Dublin No-Gi Open, all in the Master 2 division. He added further silverware in 2019, winning the IBJJF London Winter Open and the UAEJJF Grand Slam Tour London in the Master 1 category.

Roots in Brazil

Looking back further, Canha's competitive history in Brazil includes a 2nd place finish at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 1997 as a Blue Belt — a result that speaks to the early promise he displayed long before arriving on the European scene.
