Romulo Rocha

Rômulo Elizeu Rocha Diniz was born in March 2001 in Paço do Lumiar, Maranhão, Brazil, and raised in the nearby city of Tutóia. As a teenager, he showed no particular pull toward competitive sports, spending his time on casual pursuits like futsal with friends. It was that same sport, however, that set him on an unexpected path toward martial arts. In 2016, a physical altercation with an older and larger opponent during a futsal match left a lasting impression, and Rômulo sought out self-defense training shortly after. He joined a jiu-jitsu academy, and what began as a practical response to a difficult moment quickly became a defining vocation.

Rômulo's first instructor was Wittenberg Matos, a brown belt at the time. Under Matos, he demonstrated exceptional early development, earning his blue belt in under a year — a promotion awarded by Matos' supervising instructor, Alessandro. Recognizing the need for a more competitive training environment, Rômulo relocated to Parnaíba to join Alliance Academy, where he trained under squad leader Daniel Correia for approximately two years.

The next move placed him at the sport's highest level of daily training. He transferred to São Paulo to join Alliance Headquarters, coming under the direct guidance of head coaches Michael Langhi and Fabio Gurgel. The relocation embedded him within one of the most decorated competition teams in the world and marked a clear turning point in his development as a competitor. On June 11, 2025, Michael Langhi promoted Rômulo to black belt, formally recognizing a career that had already produced significant results at the colored belt level.

His instructor lineage traces through the foundational figures of the sport: Carlos Gracie → Hélio Gracie → Rolls Gracie → Romero Cavalcanti → Alexandre Paiva → Fernando Tererê → Rubens Charles → Michael Langhi → Rômulo Rocha.

Rômulo established himself as one of the most formidable lightweight prospects on the IBJJF colored belt circuit during his purple and brown belt years. His breakout season came in 2022, when he captured gold at both the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship and the 2022 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship at purple belt — a pair of major international titles that announced him as a lightweight to watch. He carried that momentum into 2023, adding gold at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals and silver at both the 2023 IBJJF World Championship and the 2023 IBJJF European Championship, all at purple belt.

The transition to brown belt brought no loss of momentum. Rômulo claimed gold at the 2024 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship and earned bronze at the 2024 IBJJF World Championship, confirming that his purple belt success was no fluke. He also accumulated multiple podium finishes at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals across both belt levels — the kind of consistent domestic excellence that separates serious title contenders from occasional medalists.

Rômulo competes at Peso Leve / Lightweight, the 76.00 kg (168.0 lbs) division, and has built a competitive identity firmly rooted in finishing. He works from an open guard base, using it as a platform to generate angles and create submission entries rather than simply accumulating positional advantages. The numbers bear this out: across his first 14 black belt victories on record, 57 percent ended by submission — a rate that reflects genuine finishing intent rather than opportunistic attacks.

His submission arsenal is notably varied. Armlock and armbar finishes appear most frequently, but his recorded wins also include a kimura, a triangle, a straight ankle lock, and a verbal tap — reflecting comfort across both upper- and lower-body attacks. He also demonstrates the discipline to grind out points-based victories when submissions are not available, managing matches with competitive intelligence rather than forcing the issue at inopportune moments.

His two submission losses — to a reverse triangle and a straight ankle lock — highlight the exposure that often accompanies an open guard game. Opponents comfortable playing from unconventional positions or hunting leg entanglements can find openings against aggressive guard players. It is a characteristic vulnerability for athletes of this style, and one Rômulo will continue to refine as his black belt career develops.

Building Rhythm on the CBJJ Circuit

Rômulo's first year as a black belt was marked by consistent activity across both the CBJJ regional circuit and the IBJJF's major international calendar. In 2025, he built competitive rhythm at a series of CBJJ opens — the Victoria Open, Floripa Winter Open, Salvador Sport Open, and Brasilia Open — accumulating wins and sharpening his game ahead of the season's bigger events. At the 2025 CBJJ South American Championship, he reached the semifinals at lightweight before falling to Vitor Sotini by reverse triangle, earning a bronze medal in his debut at a major CBJJ championship as a black belt.

2026 International Campaign

The 2026 international season opened at the IBJJF European Championship in January, where Rômulo defeated Sean White by armbar in the opening round before running into Leandro Rounaud, who finished him with a straight ankle lock in the round of eight. The result provided useful data on his leg lock defense under elite competition pressure.

The season's defining performance came at the 2026 IBJJF World Championship, the most prestigious gi tournament in the sport. Rômulo worked through a competitive lightweight bracket, defeating Fabyury Khrysthyan, William Wilson, and Ethan Major across three rounds to reach the semifinals. There he met Matheus Gabriel, losing a closely contested 4×2 decision. The run earned him a bronze medal at the World Championship — a meaningful result for a competitor in his first full year on the black belt circuit.
