Rodrigo Pinheiro

Rodrigo Pinheiro was born on July 12, 1981, in Brazil, and stepped onto the jiu-jitsu mats for the first time at the remarkably young age of nine. His foundational instruction came from Ulisses Paixão and Faustino Neto — the latter affectionately known as "Mestre Pina" — who together shaped both the technical and philosophical pillars of his game. What defined Pinheiro's development above all else was loyalty: he remained under Ulisses Paixão's direct guidance for the entirety of his lower belt progression, advancing from white belt through to black belt within the same lineage.

Long before reaching black belt, Pinheiro was already measuring himself against the best. In 1999, he traveled to the United States to compete at the IBJJF Pan American Championship as a purple belt, earning a 3rd place finish — an early signal of the decorated competitive career that lay ahead.

Upon receiving his black belt from Ulisses Paixão, Pinheiro made a pivotal decision to relocate to Rio de Janeiro, immersing himself in the world-renowned Gracie Humaitá environment. He trained at the team's Tijuca branch academy under the supervision of Saulo Ribeiro — one of the most decorated and respected figures in the sport's history. It was Saulo Ribeiro who awarded Pinheiro his first black belt degree (primeiro grau), cementing a meaningful mentor-student bond within the Gracie Humaitá lineage. Pinheiro also trained extensively alongside Royler Gracie, further deepening his technical understanding and strengthening his connection to the Humaitá tradition.

This period produced some of Pinheiro's strongest competitive results. He claimed CBJJ Brazilian National titles in 2003 and 2005, and reached the podium at the IBJJF Pan American Championship in 2005, including a 3rd place finish in the absolute division that same year. Competing in the Meio Pesado (88kg/194lbs) division, these performances established him as one of the premier competitors of his generation.

Pinheiro's relationship with the United States began with that first competitive trip in 1999, but it would be several years before he made the country his permanent home. After returning to compete throughout the early 2000s, he made the definitive move to the US in 2006 at the invitation of a close friend known as "Marrinha." By 2007, he had established Rodrigo Pinheiro BJJ in San Antonio, Texas, making him one of the earliest jiu-jitsu instructors to plant roots in the region.

The academy operates under the Gracie Humaitá association, preserving the lineage Pinheiro cultivated during his years training in Rio de Janeiro. Over time, Rodrigo Pinheiro BJJ grew into one of the strongest BJJ programs in the state of Texas — a testament to Pinheiro's ability not only as a competitor, but as a teacher and institution builder. His work in San Antonio played a meaningful role in developing the regional BJJ community during a formative era for the sport's expansion across the United States.

Rodrigo Pinheiro's competitive career spans an extraordinary length of time, bookended by Pan American Championship appearances more than fifteen years apart. His first podium at that event came in 1999 as a purple belt, and he continued returning to major IBJJF competition well into his Masters years — a testament to rare longevity and an enduring passion for the sport.

Among his most significant achievements, Pinheiro claimed the IBJJF Pan American Championship title three times: in 2005 at the open black belt level, and again in 2013 and 2016 in the Master 1 division. His 2013 season stands as a career high point — he captured both the Pan American title and the IBJJF Master and Seniors World Championship in the same year. At the 2012 IBJJF World Championship, competing against elite black belts from around the globe, he reached the podium with a 3rd place finish — one of the standout results of his open black belt career. He added further Masters podium appearances at the IBJJF Master and Seniors World Championship in 2014 and 2015, and won the IBJJF American National Championship in the Master 1 division in 2016. Competing throughout in the Meio Pesado (88kg/194lbs) division, Pinheiro built a record that reflects both elite-level ability and a lifelong commitment to the art.
