Faustino Neto, widely known as Mestre Pina, was born on February 19, 1966, in Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state in Brazil's North Region. Growing up far from the martial arts hubs of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Pina found combat sports at 18 when he took up judo — a discipline that laid the groundwork for his eventual path in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
The defining moment came at a judo tournament, where he faced a competitor trained in jiu-jitsu. The technical sophistication and effectiveness of that opponent left a lasting impression, igniting a curiosity that would reshape the course of his life. By around 1987, Pina had stepped onto the jiu-jitsu mats under Carlson Gracie Junior, beginning a journey he would dedicate his life to.
