It was there that Filho first stepped onto the mats at the Carlson Gracie academy in Copacabana, beginning a lifelong dedication to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the direct guidance of Carlson Gracie.

Alongside his BJJ training, Filho simultaneously pursued Judo at Clube Regatas do Flamengo, earning his Judo black belt in 1996 while still a teenager. This dual foundation — combining the throwing and newaza traditions of Judo with the submission-focused ground game of BJJ — gave Filho a well-rounded grappling base that would define his technical identity throughout his career.
