Nyjah Rollins

Nyjah Rollins was born on July 27, 1987, in Washington, DC. Her path to Brazilian jiu-jitsu began not on the mats but in a school hallway. Faced with bullying at a young age, her parents enrolled her in a local taekwondo program at seven years old — a decision that would lay the foundation for a lifetime of martial arts dedication. Training under Grand Master Furman Marshall and the late James Wyatt at the Simba Dojang association, Rollins — then competing as Nyjah Easton — committed fully to the Korean striking art, earning her black belt after more than a decade of disciplined training.

By 17, Rollins was a devoted taekwondo practitioner with little regard for other martial arts styles. That perspective shifted when her older brother, Mike Easton — who would later compete in the UFC — challenged her assumptions about self-defence. During a discussion about the merits of different fighting systems, Mike physically demonstrated the limitations of taekwondo on the ground by pinning Nyjah against a larger opponent. The lesson was simple but decisive: grappling neutralizes striking. That encounter cracked open her martial arts worldview and drove her to explore what Brazilian jiu-jitsu had to offer.

Following her eye-opening exchange with her brother, Nyjah Rollins enrolled at Lloyd Irvin's Martial Arts, a Washington, DC-area academy with a formidable Brazilian jiu-jitsu program. Under the guidance of head instructor Lloyd Irvin and coach Donald Achnick, she began building her BJJ foundation in earnest. It was Achnick who first encouraged her to compete — a suggestion she embraced from her earliest days as a white belt.

Rollins took to competitive BJJ with both natural talent and a commitment that set her apart from the start. Her progression through the belt ranks was marked by consistent performances at the sport's most prestigious events. As a blue belt, she announced her potential with a bronze medal at the IBJJF World Championships in 2006 — a significant result for a competitor still early in her BJJ career, and a preview of the sustained excellence that would define her record across every subsequent belt level.

On June 26, 2013, Lloyd Irvin promoted Rollins to black belt, a recognition of the years of competitive achievement she had accumulated at the academy. In July 2015, she married Joseph E. Rollins and adopted his surname, transitioning from her long-standing competition name of Nyjah Easton to the name by which she is widely known today.

Building a Record Across Divisions

The 2008 season stood out as a particularly commanding stretch of her purple belt years. Rollins won gold at both the IBJJF World Championship and the IBJJF Pan Championship within the same belt division — a double title that underscored her dominance at that stage of her development. She carried that momentum forward through her brown belt years, adding an IBJJF European Open gold in 2012 alongside multiple runner-up finishes at the Worlds and Pans during that period.

Black Belt Results and Competitive Range

At black belt, Rollins continued to compete at the highest level across multiple formats. She claimed gold at the IBJJF NY BJJ Pro in 2014, won the IBJJF New York Spring Open in both 2014 and 2015, and took gold at the IBJJF New York Summer Open in 2013. Her range extended to no-gi competition as well, where she earned a silver medal at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship at black belt in 2014. Rollins competes in the Peso Leve division at 64 kg / 141.5 lbs.
