Karen Antunes was born on December 9, 1985, in Brasília, Brazil, and came to jiu-jitsu through deeply personal circumstances. Her older brother, struggling with the dangers of drugs and street life, turned to the sport as a means of finding structure and purpose. Watching jiu-jitsu transform him gave the young Karen a profound respect for grappling long before she ever stepped onto the mats herself.

The loss of her brother at a young age cast a long shadow, and Karen spent years grieving before finding a path forward. It was her younger sister who encouraged her to channel that grief into something constructive. Taking that advice to heart, Karen walked into a jiu-jitsu academy for the first time in April 2009. The connection was immediate — what began as a tentative step forward quickly became a defining pursuit.

From her first day of training, Karen Antunes' development was guided entirely by one coach: Mayko Araújo, who would later become her husband. That relationship — built on trust, mutual dedication, and a shared commitment to the sport — gave Karen a stable foundation from which she climbed steadily through the belt ranks.

Colored Belt Dominance

Her progress through the colored belt divisions was exceptional by any standard. At purple belt, she captured both the gi and no-gi IBJJF World titles. At brown belt, her résumé grew further to include IBJJF European, Pan American, and Brazilian National titles across both formats, alongside multiple world-level podium finishes. By the time Mayko Araújo awarded Karen her black belt on July 28, 2014, she had already accumulated an extensive body of international competition experience that few athletes at any level could match. The transition to black belt was not a leap into the unknown — it was the natural next step for a competitor who had spent years testing herself against the world's best.

If Karen Antunes' colored belt career established her credentials, it was a single tournament performance in the summer of 2015 that announced her arrival to the broader BJJ world. Competing at the prestigious Five Super League in August 2015, Antunes defeated former world champions Luiza Monteiro and Nijah Rollins on her way to the final — a result that drew widespread attention and confirmed her place among the elite of the female lightweight division.

Building a Championship Record

That same year, she added the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship to her résumé, a title she had previously claimed at brown belt and now secured again at the sport's highest level. Her black belt career continued to build momentum, culminating in a standout 2018 season in which she won both the IBJJF World Championship in the gi format and the IBJJF Pan American Championship. That double title run underscored her consistency and competitive longevity across an already decorated career.
