Straight Armbar

Submission

The straight armbar is a hyperextension submission targeting the elbow joint by controlling the opponent's arm between your thighs and hips while bridging against the joint. It is available from armbar control (guard-based or top-side armbar position) and mounted crucifix, where the arm is already isolated and extended.

Quick Reference

Key principles

  • · The thumb must point upward (or toward the ceiling) to ensure the elbow hyperextends against your hip line.
  • · Squeeze your knees tightly together to prevent the opponent from rotating or pulling the arm free.
  • · Control the wrist, not the forearm, to maximize leverage and minimize the opponent's ability to grip defensively.
  • · Elevate your hips into the elbow joint rather than pulling the arm down, generating superior breaking pressure.
  • · When the opponent clasps hands to defend, create separation by walking your hips higher toward the wrist or attacking the top hand grip.

Execution

  1. 1 Secure the target arm at the wrist with both hands, ensuring the thumb faces up and the arm is perpendicular to your torso.
  2. 2 Pinch your knees together tightly with the opponent's arm trapped between your thighs, keeping the elbow crease centered on your hip line.
  3. 3 Place one leg across the opponent's face or upper chest and the other across their torso to prevent them from posturing or stacking.
  4. 4 Pull the wrist toward your chest while driving your hips upward into the elbow joint in a controlled bridge.
  5. 5 Apply slow, steady pressure until the opponent taps; if they resist by clasping hands, angle slightly toward their head and pry the grip apart before finishing.

Common mistakes

  • × Leaving space between the knees allows the opponent to rotate the elbow out of alignment and escape or stack the attacker.
  • × Finishing by pulling the arm downward instead of bridging the hips up wastes core power and lets the opponent resist with bicep strength.
  • × Failing to keep the head-side leg heavy across the opponent's face permits them to sit up and relieve pressure on the arm.
