Maria Malyjasiak's journey to becoming one of the most decorated super-heavyweight competitors in Brazilian jiu-jitsu began not in a BJJ academy, but in a school gymnasium in Poland. In October 2002, she enrolled at a new school where the physical education teacher doubled as a judo instructor. A friend who already trained introduced her to the coach, and from her very first session, Malyjasiak found herself drawn to the sport. Her athleticism and competitive drive translated naturally to judo's demands, and she progressed rapidly through the ranks.

Her talent earned her a place on the Polish national judo squad at both U17 and U20 levels. Among her standout results, she claimed gold at the U17 Poland Judo National Championship in 2005, followed by a U20 National Championship title in 2007 and a first-place finish at the U20 International Class A event that same year — cementing her reputation as one of Poland's most promising young judoka.

The transition to Brazilian jiu-jitsu came in 2011, when Malyjasiak learned of a tournament in Warsaw offering an extraordinary prize: an all-expenses-paid trip to Abu Dhabi to compete in the UAEJJF World Championship. With no prior BJJ experience, she dedicated two months exclusively to training before the event — and won gold at the UAEJJF Abu Dhabi Pro Trials. That result proved transformative. The thrill of competing and winning on a new stage convinced her to leave judo behind and commit fully to BJJ. The defining relationship of Malyjasiak's jiu-jitsu career began in October 2013, when she traveled to the United States for competition and met Abmar Barbosa, a respected black belt and founder of the Abmar Barbosa JJ Association. As the two grew closer personally and professionally, Malyjasiak spent increasing time training in the United States before eventually making the move full-time. Barbosa guided her through the final stages of her competitive development, awarding her both her brown and black belts. She received her black belt on July 4, 2017 — a milestone that formally recognized years of hard-earned progress since that first Warsaw tournament.

Malyjasiak's colored belt career had already signaled that a formidable black belt competitor was emerging. She won the IBJJF No-Gi World Championship at purple belt in 2013, then at brown belt captured the IBJJF Pan Championship in 2015 and the IBJJF No-Gi World Championship in 2016. She also reached the gi World Championship final at brown belt on three occasions — 2014, 2015, and 2017 — demonstrating the sustained elite-level performance that would define her black belt years. Competing in the Peso Pesado division (79.30 kg / 175.0 lbs) and representing Poland under the Abmar Barbosa JJ Association, she carried her colored belt pedigree directly into the black belt ranks with minimal interruption.

Pan American Championship and No-Gi Success

She captured the IBJJF Pan American Championship title on three separate occasions — in 2018, 2021, and 2022 — making her one of the most decorated competitors in the history of that event at super-heavyweight. She also claimed the Pan American No-Gi title twice, in 2018 and 2021, demonstrating that her dominance extended seamlessly across both gi and no-gi formats.

IBJJF World Championship Podium Record

At the IBJJF World Championship — the sport's most prestigious annual event — Malyjasiak reached the final in both 2018 and 2023, earning silver medals on each occasion and confirming her elite status across a span of nearly a decade at black belt. She also collected bronze medals at the Worlds in 2021 and 2024, leaving her podium record at the tournament virtually unbroken across multiple competitive cycles. In 2023, she added an IBJJF European Open gold medal to her résumé, broadening the international footprint of her achievements.

Masters Competition and Cross-Format Success

Malyjasiak excelled in masters competition without sacrificing her standing in the open divisions. She claimed the IBJJF Masters World Championship in 2020, 2021, and 2023, competing and winning at the highest level in both categories simultaneously — a feat that speaks to the depth of her conditioning and competitive commitment. Beyond the IBJJF circuit, she demonstrated adaptability to submission-only formats by winning Fight 2 Win titles at welterweight in 2020 and at middleweight in 2021.

Malyjasiak's standing among the elite no-gi super-heavyweight grapplers in the world was confirmed by her performances at the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship, the sport's most prestigious no-gi event.

At ADCC 2013 in Beijing, China, she navigated the +60 kg bracket all the way to the final, where she faced the legendary Gabi Garcia — widely considered the most dominant super-heavyweight grappler of her era. Falling to Garcia in the final earned Malyjasiak the silver medal, a remarkable result that placed her among the very best in the world in the division. Notably, this performance came while she was still competing as a colored belt, underscoring the exceptional talent she had developed in a relatively short time since first stepping onto a BJJ mat.

She returned to ADCC competition at ADCC 2017 in Espoo, Finland, where she faced a highly competitive +60 kg field. Her run ended in the quarter-finals, where Jessica da Silva Oliveira eliminated her via armbar. While the 2017 result did not match the heights of Beijing, her continued presence at the ADCC level reflected her enduring standing among the international super-heavyweight elite.
