Luiz Tosta was born on August 3, 1980, in São Paulo, Brazil, and spent his formative years in near-constant motion — passing through Florianópolis, Santa Maria, and Recife before finding a more stable footing. At 12, a pivotal move to Porto Alegre introduced Tosta to Mario Reis, a friendship that would prove to be the most consequential of his martial arts life. Football continued to dominate his adolescent years, but at 15 he returned to judo, reigniting his passion for combat sports. Reis's deepening commitment to jiu-jitsu gradually drew Tosta onto the mats, setting the course for an entirely new athletic chapter.

Tosta's growth as a Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner was inseparable from his bond with Mario Reis — a relationship forged in Porto Alegre that transcended geography and endured through years of separation. When Tosta relocated to London in 2003, Reis continued to guide his development from afar, ultimately promoting him to black belt in 2009. That recognition reflected both the depth of their connection and the sustained technical evolution Tosta had undergone across more than a decade of training.

Before reaching black belt, Tosta built one of the most accomplished brown belt records on the international circuit.
