Luiz Tosta

Luiz Tosta was born on August 3, 1980, in São Paulo, Brazil, and spent his childhood in near-constant motion — relocating across Florianópolis, Santa Maria, and Recife before his family settled in Porto Alegre. That transient upbringing forged an adaptability that would later serve him well as an immigrant building a life from scratch in a foreign country.

His first exposure to martial arts came at age five with judo, though the pull of football drew him away from the mats after two years. He returned to judo at 15, and the circumstances of that return proved pivotal. The family's move to Porto Alegre at age 12 had brought him into the orbit of Mário Reis, a friendship that would shape the entire trajectory of his combat sports career. Through Reis's influence, Tosta's focus shifted from judo to jiu-jitsu, and by the time he prepared to leave Brazil for England, he trained daily as a blue belt under Reis's instruction.

Tosta arrived in London in March 2003, drawn by the promise of financial opportunity — a friend had told him he could save £100 per week, a compelling figure at the time. The departure was characteristically resourceful: he borrowed £1,000 from his mother to satisfy UK immigration requirements, sold his stock of gis to fund the plane ticket, and entered the country on a one-year student visa.

The early months were spare but purposeful. He trained at SOAS University as part of a small group that met at 8am, and lived with five Brazilian roommates committed enough to the sport to install mats in a room for home training. When the opportunity arose to return to Rio and compete at the World Championship as a blue belt, those same roommates pooled roughly £50 each to fund his travel. The investment paid off: Tosta earned a bronze medal, and Mário Reis promoted him to purple belt on the podium.

That purple belt marked the beginning of a teaching career spanning approximately a decade. Tosta took on instruction at SOAS University shortly after receiving the promotion and, as he recounted in a July 2015 interview with Jiu-Jitsu Style, taught there for around ten years. During that same period, he worked security at a nearby bar — a role that evolved into a management position, leaving him regularly finishing shifts at 6am while simultaneously pursuing his early MMA career. In that interview, Tosta reflected that jiu-jitsu "saved his life" — the discipline of daily training kept him grounded and away from drug temptations despite years immersed in London's nightlife environment.

Tosta's competitive record at colored belt reflects both a long apprenticeship and genuine elite-level results on the international circuit. After earning his purple belt on the podium at the circa-2003 World Championship in Rio, he steadily built a brown belt résumé that included two European Open titles — in 2007 and 2009 — and back-to-back runner-up finishes at the Pan-American Championship in 2006 and 2007.

The capstone of his colored belt career came at the 2010 World Championship. In preparation, Tosta trained daily alongside Roger Gracie, Luciano Cristovam, and others — an intensive block of work that sharpened him to a competitive edge. He lost a close semifinal but secured bronze at brown belt, and in a moment carrying the full weight of a friendship forged in Porto Alegre nearly two decades earlier, Mário Reis promoted him to black belt on the podium.

At black belt, Tosta continued accumulating results across both gi and no-gi formats. He took gold at the European Open No-Gi Championship in 2015 and won multiple titles at the Munich Open that same year — including both the weight and absolute divisions in the Master 1 category. His competitive identity at the black belt level leaned toward no-gi, consistent with the technical emphasis he displayed in instructional contexts.

Tosta began competing in MMA in 2004, but a growing portfolio of business ventures led him to step away from the sport for several years. He returned to competition in 2011 and assembled a six-fight winning streak that brought him to Bellator, earning him the UCMMA Bantamweight Championship — a title he held as of July 2015.

His base for MMA training was London Shootfighters, one of the most historically significant combat sports teams in the United Kingdom. As of July 2015, his daily schedule centered on afternoon sessions with the team from approximately 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm, with additional evening sessions incorporated as competitions approached.

In his Jiu-Jitsu Style interview, Tosta expressed clear ambition about competing at the sport's highest levels. He acknowledged he was still developing as a fighter but stated confidence in his ability to win at elite levels. Notably, he expressed a preference for competing in the Adult rather than Masters divisions, reasoning that recognition in the sport concentrated there — a perspective reflecting both competitive pride and a sharp understanding of how the BJJ landscape operates.

Few profiles in British BJJ blend athletic ambition with entrepreneurial ingenuity as distinctively as Tosta's. The trajectory that began with a bar security job evolved into a small hospitality enterprise: he opened his own rock-and-roll style bar and club, later acquired a 50% share of a Spanish bar in the basement of the same building, and opened a café. Simultaneously, he rented out two houses to approximately eighteen Brazilian tenants — an arrangement that reduced his own rent to roughly £10 per week.

His personal life took shape within the same environment. Tosta met his wife at his bar when she came in to celebrate her birthday. Three days later, she offered to marry him to help resolve a pressing legal situation — his visa had expired, and he was driving without insurance or a license. As of July 2015, they had been married for approximately ten years and had two children together.

By July 2015, Tosta had restructured his daily routine entirely around competitive training. He would take his children to school, return to the café for breakfast, go to the gym for walking, running, and stretching, handle business matters, and then train with London Shootfighters in the afternoon. In service of his competitive goals, he had abstained from alcohol for nearly a year as of that date — a notable commitment for someone who owned two bars — and stepped back from regular class instruction, offering only occasional seminars to concentrate fully on personal preparation.

Tosta's no-gi technical identity was documented in detail in the July 2015 Jiu-Jitsu Style feature titled Shedding the Gi (Issue 25), where he demonstrated a series of interconnected sequences reflecting a submission-oriented, control-heavy approach.

Triangle Entries from Top Position

The first sequence begins from a side control or kesa gatame variant. Tosta brings his right leg over the opponent's left arm and pushes the head away, then swings the right leg over to lock a Triangle Choke. If the finish from the top position stalls, he rolls to the back, applies a gable grip, lifts the hips, and completes the choke from there — a fluid continuation that transforms a stalled top attack into a back-take and submission.

Heel Hook Entries from Top Guard

The second sequence covers heel hook entries from a top or open guard scenario. Tosta leads with his left leg to prevent a de la Riva hook, pins the back of the opponent's right knee, then sits back to lock a leg triangle and extend for control. He then inserts his right forearm under the opponent's heel and twists to finish. In the lead-up to the 2010 World Championship, Tosta's training circle expanded significantly. Daily sessions alongside Roger Gracie and Luciano Cristovam provided the competitive sharpening that preceded his brown belt bronze medal and black belt promotion — a training environment that reflects the level at which Tosta operated within the London grappling scene during that period.

His primary institutional home has been London Shootfighters, where he prepared for both gi and MMA competition. He also maintained ties with the Black Thursday team — comprising Max Campos, Edu Gonçalves, and Marco Canha — acknowledging their role in his development. By July 2015, Tosta had stepped back from regular class teaching entirely, offering only occasional seminars as he redirected his focus toward personal competitive preparation.
