Lucas Protásio was born on May 7, 2000, in Brazil, into a family where grappling was not simply a hobby but a way of life. His father, Clóvis Protásio, a seasoned competitor and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, ensured that combat sports occupied a central place in Lucas's upbringing from the earliest age — providing both the environment and the inspiration to pursue martial arts with genuine seriousness.

Protásio's competitive journey began in judo at age 7, a discipline that built his foundational understanding of balance, timing, and body mechanics. As he entered his early teens, he transitioned to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under his father's direct guidance. The synthesis of judo's explosive throwing mechanics and jiu-jitsu's systematic ground game gave Protásio a well-rounded technical base that would underpin his success at every level of competition that followed.

Lucas Protásio's development as a grappler was shaped by a carefully expanded coaching circle that elevated his game at each stage. After his formative years under Clóvis Protásio, he broadened his training to include Bruno Ramos and the Barreto Brothers — Bruno Barreto and Thiago Barreto — who stand as pillars of Checkmat.

His progression through the colored belt ranks was defined by exceptional results on the biggest stages. At blue belt, Protásio announced himself as a top prospect by winning the IBJJF World Championship in 2018, then reinforced that status the following year by claiming the world title again at purple belt in 2019. Back-to-back world championships across consecutive belt levels placed him among the most decorated young grapplers of his generation.

His brown belt career was effectively interrupted by the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic, which curtailed major tournament activity during that period. Rather than stagnating, Protásio channeled that forced hiatus into continued mat development. In May 2021, Bruno Barreto and Thiago Barreto promoted him to black belt under the banner of Checkmat, marking the formal opening of the next chapter in his competitive career.

Few competitors in recent memory have demonstrated the kind of cross-belt consistency that Lucas Protásio displayed during his colored belt years. His first major statement came at the 2018 IBJJF World Championship, where he claimed gold at blue belt with a technical maturity that belied his age. That same year, he captured gold at the IBJJF European Open at blue belt, having already reached the podium at the IBJJF European Championship in 2017.

Rather than experiencing the regression that many competitors face when advancing in belt, Protásio elevated his performances. At the 2019 IBJJF World Championship, he won the purple belt division — making him a two-time world champion across two consecutive belt levels, a rare achievement that underscored both his technical consistency and his competitive composure under pressure. His performances at the 2019 Pan Championship further illustrated his dominance, where he reached the final and finished as runner-up at purple belt, a result that complemented his world title within the same competitive cycle.

This sustained run of results established Protásio as one of the most decorated colored belt competitors of his era and set high expectations for his eventual arrival in the black belt division.

Following his black belt promotion in May 2021, Lucas Protásio wasted little time in confirming that his colored belt success was no aberration. He embraced the Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Pro (AJP) circuit as a primary competitive platform, quickly establishing himself as one of the division's most consistent performers in the lightweight category.

2022: Breakthrough at the Highest Level

The pinnacle of his black belt career arrived at the 2022 AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro, where Protásio claimed gold — his most prestigious black belt title to date. That same year, he added AJP Grand Slam victories in London and Rio de Janeiro, demonstrating a global competitive presence that spanned multiple continents within a single season. He also captured gold at the 2022 IBJJF South American Championship, further cementing his standing in the lightweight division. His appearance at the ADCC Brazilian Trials in 2022, where he reached the podium, signaled broader ambitions in the no-gi arena and a willingness to compete across all major grappling formats.

2023–2024: Sustained Elite Consistency

In 2023, Protásio returned to the final of the AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro, finishing as runner-up and confirming the elite-level consistency that had become his trademark. He also reached the podium at the IBJJF European Championship and its no-gi counterpart that year, and earned a bronze at the AJP Grand Slam in London. In 2024, he added another AJP Grand Slam title in Tokyo to his growing collection of black belt accolades.

Beyond the AJP circuit, Protásio made notable appearances at the Copa Podio Grand Prix, broadening his exposure on the international grappling stage. Competing for Brazil and representing Checkmat, Protásio has steadily built a black belt résumé that fully reflects the promise he displayed throughout his formative competitive years.
