As a child, he developed a deep fascination with martial arts through anime, particularly Dragon Ball Z, whose dynamic depictions of combat and disciplined fighters captured his imagination. That curiosity soon crossed from fiction into reality when he began watching live classes at an after-school karate program in his neighborhood, where the atmosphere of real training only deepened his interest.

Central to Samson's early development was his father, a dedicated mixed martial arts fan who recognized and actively encouraged his son's passion. With that support behind him, Rolando began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the age of nine under Alex Brandão, taking his first steps onto the mat with the same enthusiasm that had drawn him to martial arts through cartoons and neighborhood observation.

Early Titles and Foundational Success

Samson's competitive career began well before adulthood, and the results he produced across the child and juvenile divisions quickly signaled that a serious athlete was developing. His most notable early milestone came in 2011, when he claimed his first IBJJF World Championship title in the juvenile division — a significant accomplishment that validated the foundation being built at Alex Brandão's academy.

Gi and No-Gi Dominance at the Colored Belt Level

As Samson ascended through the colored belt ranks, his performances grew increasingly dominant on both the domestic and international stages. At blue belt, he captured the IBJJF World Championship in the gi in 2013, while also demonstrating exceptional versatility by winning IBJJF World No-Gi titles at blue belt in 2012 and purple belt in 2013. That combination of gi and no-gi success at the sport's highest tournaments underscored the technical breadth of his game from an early stage.

His international reach expanded in 2014 when he won the AJP Abu Dhabi World Pro at purple belt, adding a prestigious global title to a résumé that grew with each season. The next major step in Samson's development came when he transitioned to Atos Jiu Jitsu headquarters in San Diego, California, one of the most demanding training environments in the sport. There, he trained directly under André Galvão, a multiple-time ADCC and IBJJF World Champion widely regarded as one of the most accomplished figures in the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The move to Atos brought a significant elevation in training intensity, competition preparation, and overall BJJ culture.

The results of that environment were swift and clear. Following a strong 2017 competitive year that included a silver medal at the IBJJF World Championship at brown belt, André Galvão promoted Samson to black belt in June 2017. The promotion marked the culmination of a standout colored belt career and the beginning of a new chapter representing Atos Jiu Jitsu on the international stage. Samson went on to build his black belt résumé with a gold medal at the IBJJF JJ CON in 2022, followed by podium finishes at both the IBJJF World Championship and IBJJF Pan Championship in 2023.
