Tiago Bravo

Tiago Bravo was born on September 30, 1986, in Petrópolis — a city nestled in the mountain region of Rio de Janeiro state, not far from Itaípava, the area where Hélio Gracie chose to spend his later years. Growing up in this corner of Brazil during the early 1990s, Bravo developed a passion for martial arts through the action films of Jean-Claude Van Damme, whose movies captivated a generation of young Brazilians and inspired many to seek out combat sports training.

At the age of 10, Bravo set his sights on karate, drawn to the striking arts he had seen on screen. His parents steered him in a different direction — concerned about the punching and kicking involved, they enrolled him in jiu-jitsu instead, recognising grappling as an ideal blend of physical conditioning and practical self-defence. That decision proved formative. Instructor José Roberto guided Bravo through his earliest years on the mats, overseeing his development to orange belt and laying the technical foundation upon which his entire career would be built.

Approaching blue belt, Bravo made his first significant transition as a student, joining Adalberto de Souza — widely known as "Buda" — a well-regarded coach who guided him from blue belt through to brown belt. During this period, Bravo broadened his grappling education by adding judo to his training, eventually earning a purple belt in the Japanese throwing art — a credential that reflected both his dedication and the depth of his technical development.

As a brown belt, Bravo took another decisive step by joining Brasa Clube de Jiu Jitsu, one of the most prestigious academies in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Under the guidance of Muzio de Angelis, a respected figure within the Brasa organisation, Bravo refined his game to its highest level. On December 19, 2009, de Angelis promoted him to black belt — a formal recognition of his technical mastery and competitive readiness at the sport's highest rank.

Relocating to the UAE

Having long harboured the ambition of making a living through jiu-jitsu, Bravo found his opportunity in 2012, when the United Arab Emirates launched an initiative to introduce BJJ as a subject within its national school system. At the time, he was completing a degree in Physical Education and spoke no English — a considerable obstacle for a position based abroad. He applied regardless.

The job interview took place at a hotel in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, and Bravo's technical credentials proved more persuasive than any language proficiency ever could. He secured the position and relocated to the UAE, establishing himself as both a respected coach and a competitive force on the UAEJJF circuit.

Competitive Record

Representing the UAE as a featherweight competitor at 70kg/154lbs, Bravo built a strong international record across some of the most prestigious tournaments on the UAEJJF calendar. He claimed gold at the UAEJJF Dubai Pro in 2012 and gold at the UAEJJF Grand Slam in London in 2016, while his runner-up finish at the Abu Dhabi World Pro in 2014 announced him as a genuine title contender at the elite level. He added further podium appearances at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam in 2018 and 2019, and carried his competitive reputation back to Brazil with a bronze medal at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals No-Gi in 2011. Achieved across multiple years and continents, these results cement Bravo's standing as one of the more accomplished featherweights of his competitive generation.
