Lucas Castro

Lucas Castro was born in April 2002 in Capivari, a municipality in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. His martial arts journey began at age 10 through Muay Thai, where he built an early foundation in striking discipline and combat sports conditioning.

The turning point arrived at age 15 through an unlikely connection. Seeking to gain weight, Castro consulted a nutritionist whose husband was a local jiu-jitsu black belt and head instructor at a Gracie Barra academy in Capivari. She arranged a trial week at the gym — and that single week proved transformative. Castro took to grappling with immediate conviction, canceling his Muay Thai membership to dedicate himself entirely to BJJ.

Under the guidance of Coach Flavio Guilherme Gilli at the Capivari Gracie Barra academy, Castro developed rapidly. He established himself as a consistent force on the local and regional circuit, laying the groundwork for a career that would soon extend far beyond Brazil.

Castro's trajectory shifted decisively when, competing as a purple belt in Brazil, he received an invitation from Paulo Eduardo "Piu," a Gracie Barra instructor based in the United States. Coach Piu offered Castro the opportunity to relocate and train and compete full-time — an offer Castro accepted without hesitation.

Castro relocated to Chandler, Arizona, continuing his development under Coach Paulo Eduardo at the local Gracie Barra franchise. The move brought a shift in competitive identity as well: Castro transitioned from competing under the Brazilian flag to representing the United States in international competition. In September 2023, Paulo Eduardo awarded Castro his black belt, formalizing years of dedicated progression that had spanned two continents.

Lucas Castro competes in the Rooster weight division — known in Portuguese as Peso Galo, at 57.60 kg / 127.00 lbs — one of the most technically demanding and tactically intricate divisions in the sport. His entry into black belt competition was swift and decisive.

In 2024, Castro claimed his first major black belt title at the IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu CON tournament, a significant milestone in his elite-level debut. That same year, he demonstrated consistency across formats by earning a silver medal at the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi, placing 2nd in a fiercely competitive field. He added a 3rd place finish at the IBJJF American Nationals in 2024, further solidifying his standing among the division's top competitors. His performances across both Gi and No-Gi at premier IBJJF events reflect a well-rounded, high-IQ competitive game built to thrive at the highest levels of the sport.

Long before his black belt promotion, Castro had already established himself as a consistent podium presence across multiple belt levels. As a juvenile competitor, he reached the podium at the IBJJF World Championship in 2019 and earned back-to-back 3rd place finishes at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 2018 and 2019 — early signals of international-level potential.

His progression through the upper belts reinforced that promise. As a purple belt, Castro placed 3rd at the IBJJF Pan Championship in 2022, then returned to that same podium a year later as a brown belt in 2023. His brown belt campaign was particularly strong: he reached the podium at the IBJJF World Championship Gi in 2022 and earned a silver medal at the IBJJF World Championship No-Gi in 2023. A gold medal at the 2023 IBJJF American Nationals at brown belt served as the defining confirmation — marking Castro as one of the most accomplished colored belt competitors in his weight class and setting the stage for his promotion to the elite level.
