George Gracie

George Gracie was born in 1911 in Belém do Pará into a wealthy and respected family that later encountered financial difficulties, prompting a relocation to Rio de Janeiro. There, his older brother Carlos Gracie introduced him to jiu-jitsu — a fateful encounter that set George on a path to becoming the most prolific competitive fighter the Gracie family produced in the first half of the twentieth century.

Around 1930, George and Carlos assumed control of the Academia de Jiu Jitsu in Rio de Janeiro, which had previously been run by Donato Pires dos Reis, under whom both brothers had served as assistant instructors. Roberto Pedreira, in his historical work Choque Vol. 1, theorizes that Carlos absorbed the majority of his jiu-jitsu from Pires dos Reis rather than from Mitsuyo Maeda directly, given that Pires dos Reis held a formal certification from Maeda. George maintained a genuinely positive relationship with Pires dos Reis throughout his career, later returning to assist him in São Paulo at the Studio Scientifico de Defesa Pessoal — a collaboration that reflected George's pragmatic, open-minded orientation toward the martial arts world beyond the Gracie family structure.

A Record That Stands Apart

By any measurable standard, George Gracie was the most active competitive fighter of his generation within the Gracie family. According to Roberto Pedreira's Choque Vol. 1, George recorded 65 fights between 1930 and 1948 — compared to 12 for Hélio Gracie and a single recorded match for Carlos Gracie. That disparity underscores just how central George was to the family's early fighting legacy. He carried the Gracie name across Brazil, competing in jiu-jitsu, luta livre, wrestling, and vale tudo (no-holds-barred) bouts, accumulating one of the most impressive unbeaten runs of his era.

Gato Ruivo: The Red Cat

Nicknamed Gato Ruivo — The Red Cat — for his red hair and offense-first fighting style, George represented a sharp contrast to Hélio's more defensive and methodical approach. A 2015 profile in Jiu-Jitsu Style magazine (Issue 26) describes George as a calculated risk-taker whose willingness to engage offensively defined his competitive identity. That style was on vivid display in 1933 when George — weighing just 63 kg — faced Tico Soledade, an 80 kg weightlifter known as "the Bull of Copacabana," and defeated him by choke in approximately five minutes. Pedreira characterizes the bout as the dawn of a new era of vale tudo competition in Brazil.

Losses, Pro-Wrestling, and Continued Growth

George's first recorded loss came on October 6, 1934, when Polish powerhouse Zbysco Waldek submitted him by armbar. From 1934 onward, George also participated in pro-wrestling marmeladas — worked or fixed bouts — a pragmatic decision that, per Pedreira's account in Choque Vol. 2 as reported in the Jiu-Jitsu Style profile, reflected his realistic assessment that such arrangements were often the only commercially viable option in 1930s and 1940s Brazil. His fighting weight grew from 63 kg in 1933 to 70 kg by April 1936, reflecting his continued physical development across the decade.

In 1952, at the age of 41 and reportedly out of shape, George suffered a submission loss to Pedro Hemeterio — a top student of Hélio Gracie who had established his own school in Fortaleza — after 26 minutes of competition. The defeat was notable less for its result than for what it represented: George competing deep into middle age, still engaging the next generation of Gracie-lineage fighters on the mat.

George Gracie is widely regarded as the first de facto champion produced by the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu system. Notably, he was never formally crowned the family champion — the designation was earned through performance and reputation rather than any official proclamation.

The Split and Its Causes

By 1932, George had departed the Academia Gracie and established himself as an independent instructor at Rua do Catete 310 in Rio de Janeiro. The primary catalyst for the split, according to multiple sources, was George's desire to fight Hélio in the ring to definitively settle who was the best fighter in Rio de Janeiro — a challenge that Carlos Gracie firmly opposed. Additional tensions arose over the use of the Gracie name and George's preference for retaining his own ring earnings rather than operating under Carlos's financial direction, but the competitive rivalry with Hélio appears to have been the central rupture.

Building an Independent Empire

George's career then took him south. By December 1935, he was teaching at Academia Loanzi in Belo Horizonte, and within a month had been contracted to instruct the Civil Guard there — a prestigious institutional appointment that confirmed his full relocation to the city. After a 1951 move to Recife, where his son George Jr. was born, George returned to Rio de Janeiro and opened his own George Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in deliberate proximity to the Gracie Academy — a competitive gesture rather than a geographical coincidence.

His business model differed meaningfully from Carlos's approach. Where the Gracie Academy relied on individual lessons at higher price points, George implemented group classes at approximately 200 cruzeiros per month — a structure that made training significantly more accessible to the broader public. According to Reila Gracie, Hélio was sufficiently unsettled by the competition that he attempted, unsuccessfully, to persuade George to close his school. By April 1955, George had expanded further, opening an affiliate in Engenho Nova at Rua Barão de Bom Retiro.

Despite the professional fracture, the personal bond between the brothers was never entirely severed. George's wife Lina recalled, in the Jiu-Jitsu Style 2015 profile, that the two brothers argued but genuinely liked each other, and that George frequently quoted Carlos admiringly. Their re-established personal contact in the early 1950s confirmed that competitive rivalry never fully extinguished the family connection beneath it.

George's career was marked by two incidents that illustrated the volatile intersection of personal honor, family loyalty, and professional rivalry characteristic of the early Gracie era in Rio de Janeiro.

The first involved João Baldi. On January 14, 1932, Oswaldo Gracie defeated Baldi in a sanctioned match, choking him unconscious in 58 seconds. George subsequently confronted Baldi in a separate incident at a bar — an altercation involving four members of the Gracie family against one, resulting in Baldi's hospitalization. The two events were distinct: one a legitimate competitive bout, the other a street-level confrontation that reflected the charged atmosphere surrounding Gracie rivalries of the period.

The second incident carried more serious legal dimensions. On October 18, 1932, outside the Tijuca Tênis Clube, George, Carlos, and Hélio attacked Manuel Rufino with a steel box in what sources describe as a documented, premeditated assault. All three brothers were formally accused and ultimately acquitted when the prosecution failed to present sufficient evidence — but the incident itself is well-established in the historical record. Together, the Baldi and Rufino incidents form a candid part of the Gracie family's early history, one that sources have documented with increasing frankness in recent decades.

George Gracie's approach to training was ahead of its time in its openness to multiple disciplines. Much as Rolls Gracie would do decades later, George embraced luta livre alongside jiu-jitsu rather than treating cross-training as a compromise of identity. This multi-disciplinary philosophy informed both his competitive performance and his instruction, giving his students a broader and more adaptable skill set than was common in the era.

His effectiveness as a coach was demonstrated concretely through the results of his student Milton Pereira, whose competitors went on to defeat opponents from the Gracie Academy in head-to-head competition — with only a single exception. The broader lineage George established found one of its most important expressions through Octavio de Almeida, a significant São Paulo instructor whose school produced Moises Muradi, co-founder of Lotus Club. That team spread George's jiu-jitsu internationally, and as noted in the 2015 Jiu-Jitsu Style profile, James "300" Foster of Seattle represents one of many competitors under the Lotus Club banner who carry George Gracie's lineage into the twenty-first century. George Gracie was married to Lina, and the couple had at least one child — George Jr., born in Recife in 1951. By multiple accounts he led a colorful personal life: Raul Lima, in an account preserved in the Jiu-Jitsu Style 2015 profile, recounted an extended gambling trip George undertook from Las Vegas to France, an anecdote consistent with the playboy reputation that followed him through much of his adult life.

Through it all, George carried a quiet resentment of being underrecognized within the family he had done so much to build. The Jiu-Jitsu Style profile describes him as feeling that his role as the family's primary gladiator — the man who racked up 65 bouts while his brothers competed far less frequently — had not been adequately acknowledged in the Gracie mythology as it grew. The history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, as popularized in the latter decades of the twentieth century, centered on Carlos and Hélio; George occupied a more complicated and undervalued position in that narrative.

In 1985, George developed heart and prostate problems. He died of a heart attack on August 8, 1985. His legacy endures through the lineage he built independently of the main Gracie Academy, through the students and schools that trace their jiu-jitsu back to him, and through the historical reassessment that has gradually restored his place as the most active and arguably most consequential competitive fighter of his generation within the family that founded Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
