Jose Carlos Lima

Jose Carlos Lima was born on December 25, 1976, in Recife, the capital of Brazil's northeastern state of Pernambuco. Raised in the neighboring state of Rio Grande do Norte, in its capital city of Natal, he developed a deep connection to martial arts from an early age. At just 8 years old, he joined a local judo club, embarking on a disciplined path that would carry him well into adulthood. That early immersion in competitive grappling instilled the foundational values of technical precision, perseverance, and physical conditioning — qualities that would come to define both his competitive career and his identity as a coach.

At the age of 17, a pivotal encounter at his judo club in Natal introduced Jose Carlos to brothers Daniel and Jair Lourenço. A natural friendship formed between Jose and Jair, eventually leading to an invitation to visit Lourenço's gym. That first exposure to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu proved transformative — witnessing the efficiency and sophistication of the ground game opened Jose Carlos' eyes to a martial art that complemented and extended everything he had learned through judo.

He joined the Kimura / Nova União academy under Jair Lourenço and committed fully to the sport, dedicating years of focused training to progressing through the ranks. His perseverance and technical development were ultimately recognized when Jair Lourenço awarded him the black belt, completing a journey that had begun through a shared passion for grappling on the judo mats of Natal.

In 2005, Jose Carlos' life took an unexpected international turn when he met a Norwegian woman on a beach in Natal. The relationship deepened through months of long-distance visits between Brazil and Norway, and the two eventually married, with Jose Carlos relocating to Gjøvik — a city in southeastern Norway — to build a family.

Arriving in a country where BJJ was still in its early stages of development, Jose Carlos found that while the sport had a foothold in Oslo, the Norwegian capital sat roughly two hours from Gjøvik — a commute too demanding to sustain consistent training. Rather than compromise his practice, he established his own academy, founding a Kimura / Nova União affiliate in Gjøvik. The decision proved far-sighted: within two years of opening, the gym had grown sufficiently for Jose Carlos to leave his farming work behind entirely, supporting himself and his family through the academy and the network of affiliates that emerged from it. He became Kimura / Nova União's official representative across Scandinavia, planting the team's flag in a region where the sport was still finding its identity.

What began as a local solution to a logistical problem grew into one of the most respected Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academies in Europe. Jose Carlos' gym in Gjøvik became a genuine center of excellence, producing high-level competitors who went on to make their mark on the global IBJJF circuit. Among the most prominent names to emerge from his academy are Espen Mathiesen and Tommy Lilleskog Langaker, both of whom established themselves as major forces in European and world-level grappling competition.

Beyond developing individual champions, Jose Carlos built a network of affiliate academies across Scandinavia, extending Kimura / Nova União's influence throughout the region. His academy's consistent production of elite-level athletes across multiple generations of students cemented its reputation as a reference institution for the sport on the European continent.

Alongside his work as a coach and academy builder, Jose Carlos Lima maintained an active competitive career on the IBJJF European circuit, performing with remarkable consistency across gi and no-gi formats in the Peso Médio division (82.30 kg / 181.5 lbs) and across multiple age categories.

His competitive record reflects both longevity and technical adaptability. As far back as 2009, competing at the brown belt level, he claimed gold at the IBJJF European Open in the Master division — an early signal of his capacity to perform under pressure at international events. After earning his black belt, Jose Carlos continued to compete at the highest level, reaching the top of the podium at the 2017 IBJJF European Open Championship in the Master 3 division and securing the no-gi European Open title in 2014 in the Master 2 Absolute category. He also captured gold at the 2013 IBJJF London International Open in the Senior 1 division and earned a third-place finish at the IBJJF World Masters Championship in 2014.

Multiple runner-up and third-place finishes at European Opens across 2012, 2014, and 2016 further demonstrate his sustained presence at the highest levels of masters competition — a competitive career that ran in parallel with, and remained inseparable from, his larger mission of building BJJ in Scandinavia.
