Born on January 25, 1995, in Brazil, Jackson Douglas grew up with a restless, combative energy that routinely spilled into street altercations during his childhood. His mother, wary that formal martial arts training would intensify rather than temper that aggression, resisted enrolling him in any combat discipline. After considerable persuasion, she relented — and by age 10, Douglas had channeled his energy into capoeira, a structured environment that began shaping his raw intensity into something purposeful.

At 14, Douglas expanded his martial arts foundation by taking up kickboxing and Muay Thai at a local gym. Convinced that striking arts represented the highest form of combat, he carried that belief until age 15, when a close friend persuaded him to attend a jiu-jitsu class. What he expected to dismiss, he found himself unable to leave behind. That single session ignited a passion that would come to define his entire athletic life.

Jackson Douglas's entry into jiu-jitsu was anything but conventional. His first classes took place inside a local church, where coach Renato Alves — a student of Ramon Lemos — taught grappling to a small, dedicated group. The setting was modest, but the technical grounding Douglas received there planted the seeds of a genuine competitive identity.

Seeking a higher-level training environment, Douglas moved to Junior Gabriel's Checkmat Academy in Sorocaba, where he trained through his purple belt. Gabriel's methodology resonated deeply, and the relationship proved foundational during his formative competitive years. As his ambitions sharpened, however, Douglas recognized that the club's approach to competition did not match the intensity he was pursuing. The tournament-focused culture he needed simply wasn't there.

That realization drove a pivotal decision: Douglas relocated to Cicero Costha's athlete house in the São Paulo area, widely regarded as one of the most prolific talent-producing schools in the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Immersed among some of the sport's most gifted competitors, every dimension of his game sharpened under that pressure. It was within this demanding environment that Douglas earned his brown belt — the result of a deliberate, consistent pattern of choosing competitive intensity over comfort at every stage of his development.

As a brown belt, Jackson Douglas made another bold move: he relocated to the United States to test himself on the world's largest and most competitive grappling circuit. The decision proved transformative. Stateside, Douglas crossed paths with Lucas Leite, the renowned instructor leading Checkmat out of La Habra, California. The two developed a strong friendship, and Leite extended an invitation to join his team — an offer that carried personal significance, representing a return to the Checkmat family where Douglas's structured BJJ journey had first taken root under Junior Gabriel.

After an extended period refining his skills under Leite's guidance and continuing to compete at the highest levels, Douglas received his black belt promotion from Lucas Leite in November 2020. The milestone marked the culmination of a journey that began in a church grappling room in Brazil and ended at one of the most respected academies in North America. Douglas competes in the Pesadíssimo division, the heaviest weight class in the sport at over 100.50 kg (222.0 lbs).

Long before his black belt promotion, Jackson Douglas had already established himself as one of the most decorated colored belt competitors of his generation across both the IBJJF and AJP circuits. His results at multiple belt levels and across multiple continents consistently reflected a high-level athlete who elevated his performance at the sport's biggest events.

Purple Belt Dominance

At purple belt, Douglas claimed gold at the 2018 CBJJ Brazilian Nationals and the 2018 ACBJJ European Championship, proving that his competitive excellence extended well beyond any single region. That same year, he earned silver at the 2018 AJP Grand Slam London, confirming his ability to perform at the top tier of the AJP tour.

Brown Belt Success Across Continents

The transition to brown belt amplified his results further. Douglas captured gold at the 2018 IBJJF South American Championship and the 2019 IBJJF American Nationals, adding titles across two federation circuits. He was a consistent podium presence at the IBJJF Pan Championship in both Gi and No-Gi formats, earning silver medals in the Gi division in 2020 and in the No-Gi division in both 2018 and 2020. A runner-up finish at the 2020 AJP Grand Slam Miami reinforced his standing on the AJP tour. At the domestic level, Douglas continued to compete sharply, finishing second at the 2019 CBJJ Brazilian Nationals No-Gi and collecting silver at the 2019 IBJJF South American Championship.

Black Belt Debut

Following his promotion, Douglas wasted no time signaling his intent at the elite level, earning a third-place finish at the IBJJF American Nationals No-Gi in 2020 — a strong debut that demonstrated his readiness to carry his colored belt dominance into the sport's highest division.
