About this video
The R Guard is a viable attacking guard and an alternative to the De La Riva guard. It reduces the risk of getting stacked or back stepped on and allows for creating off balance.
- The R Guard position is similar to a reinforced De La Riva position. It prevents the opponent from driving their knee forward into a knee cut.
- Using your legs like a lever, you can create good means of off balancing.
- Compared to the De La Riva guard, the R Guard reduces the risk of getting back stepped into a cross Ashi position or getting a scoop grip on the top leg, which can lead to getting stacked.
- In the R Guard position, even if someone tries to smash your knees together, you can create a good means of off balance framing and look to always pummel two feet back to the inside.
- If you get smashed really badly and can't create any frames, you can glue your knee back to your chest and start looking to establish a side guard on the same side that your opponent's trying to smash your knees to.
- The R Guard reduces the risk of having to recover from someone back stepping on you into your legs and reduces the risk of someone being able to set up scoop grips.
- With the R Guard, you can create enough space to bring your knees to your chest and start to look to force a side guard to recover from there.
The R Guard is a strong position to play, especially as an attacking guard when you're forced to a supine position, or if you want to play a more supine position.
