About this video
Preventing leg locks from the side guard position involves several key steps:
- Always be ready to pummel early. This involves using your free hand to strip off any attempts by your opponent to control your leg.
- Point your toes to prevent your opponent from gaining control of your leg.
- Prevent your opponent from collecting the knee line. If they try to cup underneath your leg, use your free hand to strip that off.
- If your opponent falls back, go into a hidden position and create a turn immediately. Do not let them collect the knee line.
- Pummel your shin in front of your opponent's knee and get your knee all the way down to the floor. This will help you free your knee line if your opponent tries to collect it.
- Do not allow knee line control. If your opponent tries to control above your knee line, hand fight to prevent them from doing so.
- Always be ready to pummel in and prevent your opponent from throwing your leg over. Keep your toes pointed at all times.
- If your opponent tries to drop back from a side guard position, bring your two knees together and create a shin wedge in front of your opponent's shin. This will prevent them from pulling your knee line in.
- Keep your foot pointed and hidden, with your heel against your opponent's hip. Always be ready to pummel and prevent your opponent from pulling your leg in.
- Use hand fighting and keep your knee down to the floor to ensure your knee line is never controlled.
Remember, the key to preventing leg locks from the side guard position is to always be ready to pummel, prevent knee line control, and use your shin and knee positioning to your advantage.
