Using the leg lasso to retain guard can be done in a few ways:

  1. From a knee cut, lasso through to get back to your frame. This can be done in no-gi by controlling behind the elbow as you lasso over, then weaving your toes through. This is particularly effective if your opponent maintains a strong grip on your tricep, making it hard for you to pull away. This lasso can help create good inversions.
  2. From a side guard position, lasso through, throw your foot over and lasso it in. Reach between the space created and grab your opponent's tricep. This grip will prevent your opponent from getting away and can be used if they try to pull away. There will be a gap of space where your foot can make its way across, allowing you to establish different K guard positions and go into K guard attacks.
  3. Clear the wrist grip by pushing your wrist in between your opponent's legs or retracting your hand. Your foot can then make its way to your opponent's hip as a K hook. This slows down your opponent if they try to pull away, keeping you sticky in the position.
  4. If your opponent keeps disengaging and resetting, lasso through and control their tricep. This makes it hard for them to get away and allows you to set up attacks. This technique helps keep you sticky from your guard retention to be able to start attacking.

These techniques are effective for maintaining control and creating opportunities for attacks.
