About this video
Understanding personal motivation is crucial for competitors. It's important to know why you want to compete, as this influences your approach to training and competition. Initially, competition may be a necessity or expectation from coaches who see potential. However, as you progress, finding personal reasons to compete becomes essential.
Competing out of obligation can lead to resentment, which can negatively affect both training and attitude towards the sport. It's vital to maintain a positive relationship with Jiu-Jitsu and not let competition strain that bond. Reflecting on whether competition is a personal desire or an external expectation can help prevent this.
Write down your motivations for competing. Consider if they stem from personal goals or the influence of others. Understanding the source of your motivation will help you manage the pressures of competition and set realistic expectations.
Competing to make others proud can add a heavy burden of failure. It's important to practice detaching from external pressures and focus on self-driven motivation. Enjoying the process, having fun with game planning, training, and even competing, is key to a fulfilling competitive journey.
Channel fear into positive energy and approach Jiu-Jitsu with a playful and fun attitude. This mindset will help you look forward to competitions and develop a competitive strategy without being overwhelmed by fear of failure.
