Todd Margolis was born on May 2, 1976, in La Plata, Maryland, and grew up in Port Tobacco, MD. His path to becoming one of the most accomplished American grapplers of his era began not on the BJJ mats but on the wrestling mat. Starting at age 12, Margolis forged a grappling foundation built on leverage, timing, and competitive instinct — qualities that would define his martial arts career. That foundation culminated in the Maryland State High School Wrestling Championship in 1994, a title that signaled both his natural aptitude and his drive to compete at the highest level.

The transition to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came through a family friend who introduced Margolis to the art at age 21. He began training at Mario Yamasaki's gym in the Washington, D.C. area, where his wrestling background accelerated his technical development considerably. By 1998, he had earned his blue belt — a reflection of his rapid progress and ability to translate his grappling instincts into BJJ mechanics. As his skills matured, he took on teaching responsibilities at Yamasaki's gym, beginning a coaching career that would eventually span two continents.

Margolis's ascent through the colored belt ranks produced a series of landmark performances that established him as one of the premier American grapplers of the 2000s. At purple belt in 2001, he claimed gold at the Gracie World Championship and reached the final of the IBJJF Pan Championship — a back-to-back result that demonstrated his consistency across major events. His standout moment came at the 2001 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship, where he made history as the first American to defeat a member of the Gracie family in IBJJF competition, submitting Igor Gracie in one of the defining bouts of his career. He reinforced that momentum with another Gracie World Championship title at brown belt in 2002.

After parting ways with Yamasaki's club, Margolis earned his black belt under Pedro Sauer, aligning himself with one of the most respected instructors in the Sauer lineage. Throughout this period, he maintained a close training relationship with Lloyd Irvin, whose competitive team sharpened his edge at the elite level. In 2002, he finished second at the ADCC US Trials, confirming his standing among the top submission grapplers in the country.

At black belt, Margolis continued to break new ground. At the 2003 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship, he became the first American black belt to reach the final of the IBJJF Pan Championship, earning silver in a historic milestone for American BJJ. The following year, at the 2004 Pan Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship, he returned to the podium with a bronze medal in the Absolute division — confirmation that his 2003 result was no anomaly but the product of sustained elite-level preparation.

In 2005, at the height of his competitive powers, Margolis suffered a serious spine injury that forced him out of competition for twelve years. In 2008, Margolis took his coaching career international, opening BJJ Medellin in Colombia and playing an active role in expanding Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu across South America. He remained deeply embedded in the local grappling community throughout his time there, winning the Jitstyle Colombian Nationals in 2016 — a result that demonstrated his sustained technical sharpness even after years away from international competition.

Return to the United States and Competitive Comeback

Margolis returned to the United States and founded Potomac MMA Academy in 2018, establishing a new home base for his coaching and competitive work. The following year, he made a full return to the competitive stage at the Masters' division of the 2019 Pan American No-Gi Championship, claiming gold in a powerful statement of resilience after more than a decade on the sidelines.
