Cristiano Marcello

Cristiano Marcello was born on December 3, 1977, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and grew up in a rough neighborhood where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu became both a refuge and a defining discipline. In 1989, at eleven years old, he began training at Gracie Humaitá Tijuca under Rickson Gracie, Royler Gracie, and Vinicius Aieta — an environment that shaped every dimension of his life on and off the mat.

Marcello's immersion in the Gracie system went far beyond scheduled training sessions. During his formative years, he lived with Rickson Gracie, absorbing not only the technical depth of the master's game but also his philosophy and approach to life. Training and competing alongside Royler Gracie through the peak years of BJJ, MMA, and vale-tudo gave Marcello a firsthand education in elite grappling at its highest expression.

In 1995, Marcello traveled to the United States to continue training under Rickson Gracie, remaining there until 1998 before returning to Brazil to compete in vale-tudo. Royler Gracie awarded him his black belt, cementing a lineage that traces directly to the heart of the Gracie tradition.

In 2001, Cristiano Marcello joined Chute Boxe as head coach of the grappling department, stepping into one of the most storied combat sports organizations of its era. The roster he worked with included fighters who would become legends — among them Anderson Silva and Wanderlei Silva — and Marcello played a central role in equipping them with the ground-fighting tools that defined Chute Boxe's feared reputation worldwide.

His tenure coincided with a golden era for the organization, when Chute Boxe fighters were regarded as among the most dangerous competitors on the global MMA circuit. Marcello's grappling instruction formed a critical foundation beneath the team's aggressive, pressure-based fighting identity, translating directly into results at the highest levels of the sport.

Marcello departed Chute Boxe in 2009 to devote himself fully to building his own organization. His coaching philosophy — forged across years inside elite training environments — emphasizes mental fortitude alongside technical mastery. He has spoken openly about the chemistry required between coach and athlete, stressing that producing champions demands not only extraordinary effort from the competitor but also a rare bond in which the coach actively shapes the student's psychological resilience, not just their technical arsenal.

One of the most widely circulated episodes in Marcello's story unfolded not on a competition mat but backstage at Pride Shockwave 2005, where he served as a cornerman for Ken Kaneko. Charles Bennett made insulting remarks directed at Chute Boxe and Wanderlei Silva, and Marcello responded in defense of his team.

The altercation that followed occurred backstage, away from the main card, and ended when Marcello finished Bennett with a Triangle Choke. Video of the incident circulated widely online in the years that followed, turning Marcello into a well-known figure within the global BJJ and MMA communities. Beyond its viral reach, the episode stood as a vivid demonstration of high-level grappling applied in an unscripted, real-world confrontation — precisely the scenario that has always sat at the philosophical core of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Alongside his coaching work, Cristiano Marcello maintained an active career as a professional mixed martial artist. He competed in Pride Fighting Championships, one of the premier MMA organizations of the early 2000s, and in Meca Vale Tudo, a Brazilian vale-tudo circuit that served as a crucible for some of the region's most battle-tested fighters.

Marcello also competed in the UFC and made an appearance on The Ultimate Fighter: Live at the age of 34 — a testament to his competitive longevity and his commitment to testing himself at the highest available levels of the sport. He competed throughout his professional career in the lightweight division at 76 kg (176 lbs).

His dual identity as both a high-level competitor and a respected grappling coach gave him a practical, experience-grounded perspective that informed his teaching at every stage of his post-competition career.

Following his departure from Chute Boxe in 2009, Cristiano Marcello channeled his experience and reputation into building CM SYSTEM, a BJJ organization constructed around his vision of structured, professional martial arts education. The organization has grown steadily over the years, and Marcello has promoted numerous black belt students — a body of work that reflects the depth and consistency of his instructional approach. He holds the designation of Professor GMI within the organization's framework.

Marcello has articulated the entrepreneurial philosophy behind CM SYSTEM through three core pillars: delivering professionalism and life-transforming student experiences that develop practitioners mentally, physically, and technically; maintaining genuine safety within the training environment; and offering a clear structural differentiator that sets the academy apart. These principles, drawn directly from his years inside elite combat sports environments, position CM SYSTEM as a serious institution rather than merely a gym.

In a 2026 interview with Gracie Mag, Marcello reflected on his approach to developing champions, noting that extraordinary results require both exceptional effort from the athlete and a special chemistry between athlete and coach — and that the coach's responsibility extends into building the student's mental fortitude, not just their technical game.

In August 2026, Marcello announced the upcoming inauguration of CMSYSTEM Ecoville, a flagship academy in Curitiba, Brazil, scheduled to open in September 2026. The facility represents the most ambitious expansion of the CM SYSTEM brand to date, spanning two thousand square meters across two floors and designed from the ground up to deliver a world-class martial arts environment.

The academy features a 700 m² mat area alongside a separate 500 m² mat area dedicated to striking and MMA — a layout that reflects Marcello's background across both grappling and combat sports disciplines. The facility also includes a spa, massage room, coworking area, podcast and studio space, a children's room, private rooms, full air conditioning throughout all areas including the mat surfaces, and exclusive parking for members.

The design philosophy behind CMSYSTEM Ecoville centers on creating an experience that serves not only competitors but the entire family, making martial arts accessible and appealing across generations. For Marcello, the project is both a business milestone and a direct expression of the values he has built CM SYSTEM around — professionalism, safety, and a standard of experience that elevates what a martial arts academy can be.
