Marcello Salazar

Born on March 27, 1981, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Marcello Salazar came of age in one of the most fertile environments in the world for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He stepped onto the mats in 1989 at eight years old, beginning his formal training under Coach Juarez Soares. Starting at such a formative age — during a defining era for BJJ in Brazil — gave Salazar a foundation that was both deep and technically rich. Those early years instilled the discipline and precision that would go on to define his career as both a competitor and an instructor.

Salazar's ascent through the belt ranks unfolded within the Brazilian Top Team system, one of the most storied and demanding training environments in the history of BJJ and MMA. In January 2004, after years of rigorous training and competition, he earned his black belt — promoted by two of Brazilian Top Team's most respected figures: Murilo Bustamante and Mario Sperry.

Receiving a black belt from both Bustamante and Sperry carried enormous weight. Both men were world-class grapplers and fighters who helped establish BTT as a global force in combat sports. This dual recognition reflected not only Salazar's technical proficiency but also his standing within one of the sport's most demanding lineages.

In 2003, Salazar entered the professional MMA arena, carrying with him the submission-first philosophy sharpened through years of elite grappling competition. Competing at middleweight under the nickname "The Barbarian," he built a reputation as a relentless finisher whose offensive grappling posed constant danger from any position.

His approach proved highly effective at the professional level. As of February 2010, Salazar finished more than 70 percent of his MMA victories by submission — a figure that speaks directly to how thoroughly his BJJ game translated into the cage. His career stands as a clear example of how a technically sound, offensively minded ground game, forged within a system like Brazilian Top Team, can become a decisive weapon in mixed martial arts.

Long before making his mark in MMA, Salazar built an impressive résumé on the competition grappling circuit. He captured the World Grappling Championship, confirming his standing among the elite submission grapplers of his era. His dominance extended across multiple major tournaments, earning him a US Open Championship and a Brazilian National Championship — titles that demonstrated his ability to perform at the highest levels both internationally and on home soil.

In the Master division, Salazar added a Pan American Championship to his collection, showcasing the longevity and continued sharpness of his competitive game. Across all these titles, a consistent thread emerges: the same finishing mentality he brought to the MMA cage was equally present on the competition mats.

After years of high-level competition and professional fighting, Salazar channeled his expertise into full-time instruction at Brazilian Top Team Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida. There, he carries forward the Brazilian Top Team lineage passed to him by Murilo Bustamante and Mario Sperry, transmitting those same principles — technical precision, aggressive submission hunting, and the mental toughness forged in elite competition — to the next generation of students.
