He took his first steps onto the mat at 13 as a Tae Kwon Do practitioner, developing the discipline and body awareness that striking arts demand. Those early lessons provided a meaningful foundation, but it was Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that captured his imagination.

At 15, Heredia made the transition to BJJ, drawn by the art's pragmatic effectiveness and the rich grappling culture that permeated Rio de Janeiro. That decision set the course for the rest of his life.

Early Training and Formative Influences

Heredia's BJJ education was shaped by exposure to some of the most respected figures in the art's early history. He began his grappling journey at Osvaldo Alves' gym under the guidance of Sergio Penha, before moving to the prestigious academy of Carlson Gracie, where his technical foundation deepened considerably. Family circumstances prompted further movement through Rio's academy scene, leading him to Mario Tallarico — who awarded Heredia his blue belt — and to shared mats with Sylvio Behring and Marcelo Behring during a formative stretch of his development.

Black Belt Promotion and the Gracie Humaita Connection

Heredia eventually found his home at Gracie Humaita, aligning himself with one of the most storied lineages in the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His brown belt came in 1991, confirming his standing as an advanced practitioner. In June 1995, Rickson Gracie personally promoted Heredia to black belt — a distinction that cemented both his technical excellence and his place within the Gracie family's inner circle.

Following his black belt promotion, Heredia relocated to the United States alongside Rickson Gracie and Ralph Gracie, taking an active role in the management and development of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu academies on American soil. During a period when BJJ was still establishing its identity in the United States, Heredia's contributions helped shape the early infrastructure of authentic Gracie-lineage instruction for American students.

His involvement in this expansion positioned him as a trusted figure within the Gracie family's operations, and the experience of building academies in a new country proved invaluable for what came next.

Fueled by a lifelong passion for surfing, Heredia set his sights on Maui, Hawaii, and made the move that would define his legacy as a teacher and ambassador for the sport. In 2000, he founded Maui Jiu Jitsu, establishing one of Hawaii's earliest and most prominent BJJ academies — a pioneering institution that brought serious Gracie-lineage grappling to a region far removed from the established hubs of BJJ in California and Brazil.

Under Heredia's leadership, Maui Jiu-Jitsu became a genuine development ground for world-class grapplers, demonstrating that elite BJJ could flourish in non-traditional markets given the right instruction and culture. His work on the island played a historically significant role in the growth of BJJ across Hawaii, building a community of practitioners grounded in technical precision, competitive drive, and deep respect for the art's traditions. His decision to plant the Gracie-lineage flag in Maui stands as one of the more distinctive chapters in BJJ's global expansion.

Early Titles and Black Belt Credentials

Throughout his competitive career, Heredia demonstrated a rare combination of technical mastery and extraordinary longevity. As early as 1997, he claimed gold at the Annual Joe Moreira Championship at black belt level, also competing in the Joe Moreira Invitational that same year. In 2000, he captured the Copa Pacifica Championship at black belt — a title that coincided with the founding of Maui Jiu-Jitsu and confirmed that Heredia remained a formidable competitor even as he transitioned into an academy-building role.

Pan American Championship Legacy

His most sustained run of competitive success came at the Pan American Championships. He earned Pan American silver medals in 1996 and 1998 in the Master black belt division before continuing to test himself in the Senior 2 division well into his career. Between 2005 and 2007, Heredia achieved something rare in elite competition — three consecutive Pan American Championship titles in the Senior 2 black belt division. That streak reflected not only his technical excellence but also his exceptional ability to prepare and perform at the highest level deep into his career.
