The bridge between the water and the mats came through family. His older brother, Tiago Ferreira, practiced jiu-jitsu and, in June 2010, convinced a 10-year-old Leonardo to try the sport. Rather than an abrupt transition, Ferreira carried his physical literacy and competitive instincts from surfing directly into his grappling development — a foundation that would accelerate his progress from the earliest stages of training.

Leonardo Ferreira's formal jiu-jitsu education began under coach Thomas Seade, who ran an affiliate gym of Alliance Academy.
