Luis Oliveira “Cantareira”

Luis Fernando Oliveira — known throughout the jiu-jitsu community as "Cantareira" — was born on August 4, 1998, in Brazil. His early athletic identity was built around competitive football (soccer), a path that came to an abrupt end at age 14 when a serious injury sidelined him for nearly a year. That forced pause, while difficult, ultimately redirected the course of his life.

Once cleared to return to physical activity, a family friend extended an invitation to try jiu-jitsu. The introduction proved immediately transformative. From his first class, Oliveira recognized in the sport a depth and competitive challenge that resonated with his instincts as an athlete. The transition from football to grappling was swift and decisive. His parents fueled that early momentum — driving him to tournaments every weekend and covering competition entry fees — providing the logistical and financial foundation that allowed his development to take root.

Luis Oliveira's entire belt progression — from white through black — was guided by a single instructor: Cléber Crispim. That continuity of mentorship gave his technical foundation a coherence and depth that distinguished him from competitors shaped by multiple coaching influences. By blue belt, Oliveira had already committed to jiu-jitsu as a full-time pursuit, spending every hour outside of school either training or competing.

His brown belt years marked the sharpest acceleration in both results and recognition. He claimed gold at the IBJJF South American Championship in 2020 and followed that with a Brazilian Nationals title in 2021, establishing himself as one of the country's premier colored belt competitors. It was also during this stretch that Cantareira began training alongside Leandro Lo's New School Brotherhood workgroup — one of Brazil's most respected and competitive training collectives. Competing under the Frates banner at the black belt level, he carries forward the standards and spirit of the New School Brotherhood into his next chapter.

At the black belt level, Luis Oliveira competes in the Ultra Heavyweight division — known in Portuguese as Pesadíssimo — the IBJJF's heaviest weight category, reserved for athletes over 100kg. This places him among the largest and most powerful grapplers on the international circuit, a distinct classification from the Super Pesado (Super Heavyweight) division, which caps at 100kg.

Early Black Belt Results and Domestic Success

Oliveira's black belt career gained immediate traction in 2022, with gold at the IBJJF South American Championship and a victory at the IBJJF Rio BJJ Pro — results that announced his arrival as a credible international threat. He reinforced that standing with a third-place finish at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals in 2023, demonstrating consistent presence at the sport's highest domestic level.

The 2025 European Championship Breakthrough

The defining moment of Oliveira's international career came at the 2025 IBJJF European Championship, where he delivered a double gold performance — claiming victory in both the Ultra Heavyweight division and the absolute category.
