Paulo Guillobel

Born on April 8, 1974, in Brazil, Paulo Guillobel found his path to Brazilian jiu-jitsu through adversity. Targeted by bullies during his early teens, he sought out a martial art for self-defense — a decision that would reshape the entire course of his life. In October 1988, he walked through the doors of Jorge Pereira's academy in Rio de Janeiro, and the art claimed him completely.

Under Jorge Pereira's guidance, Guillobel built the technical foundations and competitive mindset that would carry him through decades on the mats. The relationship extended well beyond a typical student-instructor dynamic, leaving a lasting imprint on his philosophy and approach to the art. After eight years of dedicated training, Guillobel earned his black belt in August 1996 — completing a journey that had begun as a teenager seeking protection and evolved into a lifelong commitment.

Guillobel's move to the United States was set in motion by a conversation with Johnny Machado in early 2000. Machado informed him that Rigan Machado was seeking an assistant instructor to run beginner classes at his California academy. Guillobel recognized the opportunity immediately, relocating in February 2000 to step into the role.

His time assisting Rigan Machado served as a pivotal transitional chapter, allowing him to establish himself within the American BJJ landscape. As his reputation grew, he founded Guillobel Jiu-Jitsu in San Clemente, California — his own academy built on the values instilled in him since his first days in Rio. The school joined the Ribeiro Jiu Jitsu Association, placing it within the lineage of Saulo Ribeiro, and quickly developed a reputation for producing competitive grapplers. André Pontes — known as "Pretzel" — stands as a notable product of the Guillobel program, exemplifying the caliber of talent the academy has developed.

Long after earning his black belt, Paulo Guillobel continued to test himself on the competition circuit, assembling an impressive record across both gi and no-gi formats in the masters and senior divisions. His ability to compete effectively across multiple weight classes — Peso Leve (76 kg/168 lbs) and Peso Médio (82 kg/181 lbs) — speaks to the depth of his technical game and the consistency of his physical conditioning.

World and Pan American Titles

Guillobel claimed the World No-Gi Championship twice: in 2008 in the master division, and again in 2011 in the senior 1 division. On the Pan American Championship stage, he built one of the more remarkable résumés in masters competition — winning gold in 2003 as an adult, in 2006 as a master, in 2010, 2011, and 2012 in the senior 1 division, and in 2015 in the master 3 division. Runner-up finishes at the World Masters Championship in 2012 (senior 1), 2014 (master 2), and 2015 (master 3) further demonstrate his sustained competitiveness at the international level. The consistency of his results across so many years and divisions stands as one of the defining hallmarks of his competitive career.

Paulo Guillobel's progression through the black belt degree system reflects a career built on continuous contribution to Brazilian jiu-jitsu as both a competitor and an educator. In August 2015, Saulo Ribeiro presented Guillobel with his 5th-degree black belt on behalf of Rio de Janeiro's federation, FJJRio — a formal acknowledgment of the decades he had invested in the art.

Guillobel subsequently received his 6th-degree black belt, a promotion reserved for those who have demonstrated sustained excellence not only as competitors, but as instructors, mentors, and community builders over many years. The distinction marks one of the senior ranks within the BJJ hierarchy and recognizes the full breadth of his service to the sport. For Guillobel, it represents the long arc of a career that began on the mats in Rio de Janeiro in 1988 and grew into the founding of an academy that has shaped practitioners across Southern California and beyond.
