He began playing at age 7, building the athletic foundation that would later translate seamlessly to the mats. At 14, Paiva made the deliberate decision to step away from extracurricular activities and focus on his academic studies — a choice that temporarily paused his athletic pursuits but revealed the disciplined, goal-oriented character that would define his BJJ career.

It was not until age 17 that Paiva found his way to Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and the path came through a personal connection. He and his brother Vinicius accepted an invitation to try a class at a local gym run by Bruno Mendes and Augusto Mendes. That single session proved to be a turning point.
