Igor Paiva

Born on July 4, 1990, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Igor Paiva grew up in the Grajaú neighborhood, where his first competitive outlet was football. He began playing at age 7, building the athletic foundation that would later translate seamlessly to the mats. At 14, Paiva made the deliberate decision to step away from extracurricular activities and focus on his academic studies — a choice that temporarily paused his athletic pursuits but revealed the disciplined, goal-oriented character that would define his BJJ career.

It was not until age 17 that Paiva found his way to Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and the path came through a personal connection. He and his brother Vinicius accepted an invitation to try a class at a local gym run by Bruno Mendes and Augusto Mendes. That single session proved to be a turning point. Despite entering the sport later than many of his future competitors, Paiva's development on the mats was rapid — a testament to both his natural athleticism and an unwavering commitment to the art.

Under the guidance of Bruno Mendes and Augusto Mendes at Soul Fighters, Igor Paiva established himself as one of the program's most decorated students. His progression through the belt ranks was underscored by consistent competitive results that validated his technical development at every stage.

Paiva's colored belt career offered an early preview of the champion he was becoming. In 2012, as a blue belt, he claimed the IBJJF World Championship title — a remarkable feat for a competitor only a few years into his training. He carried that momentum forward, winning the CBJJ Brasileiro Championship at purple belt in 2015, then adding the CBJJ Brasileiro No-Gi Championship at brown belt in 2016. That combination of gi and no-gi success demonstrated a well-rounded competitive game that extended well beyond a single format or ruleset.

On June 14, 2017, Bruno Mendes awarded Paiva his black belt — the formal recognition of nearly a decade of dedicated training and competitive achievement within the Soul Fighters system. The promotion marked not only a personal milestone but also the beginning of a new chapter in his competitive journey.

Igor Paiva is recognized as a specialist in the Lasso Guard, a sophisticated gi-based guard system that demands precise timing, disciplined grip fighting, and exceptional leg dexterity. The position requires a practitioner to control an opponent's posture and movement through intricate wrist and sleeve grips combined with leg entanglements — a technically demanding framework that rewards patience and cerebral problem-solving over raw athleticism. Paiva's affinity for this style reflects a methodical approach to competition rooted as much in intellect as in instinct.

Paiva competes in the Peso Médio (Middle Weight) division at 82.30 kg / 181.5 lbs and has demonstrated versatility across both gi and no-gi formats throughout his career.

Black Belt Debut and Regional Circuit Success

In 2017, his debut year on the black belt circuit, Paiva wasted no time asserting himself among the elite. He assembled an active run on the IBJJF regional tournament circuit across the United States, reaching the podium at multiple events. He claimed gold at the 2017 IBJJF Austin Open and earned silver and bronze finishes at tournaments in Seattle, Dallas, San Jose, and Chicago — establishing himself as a consistent and dangerous presence on the black belt scene from the moment he received his promotion.
