Helder Medeiros

Helder Medeiros was born on May 23, 1982, in João Pessoa, a coastal city in the state of Paraíba in eastern Brazil. As a youth, he participated casually in community sports, but serious competitive drive eluded him until Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu entered his life.

The path to the mats opened through family. Helder's older brother, Hermes Medeiros, began training at a local school under coach João Ramalho in the late 1990s. Watching his brother develop — and occasionally being shown techniques at home — sparked a growing curiosity in the younger Helder. That curiosity materialized on August 2, 1998, when he stepped onto the mats for the first time at age 16.

His first instructor, Vagner Guimarães, proved foundational — not only as a technical teacher but as a consistent voice of encouragement for the young Paraíba native. Under Guimarães, Medeiros earned his blue belt and built a foundation solid enough to fuel an ambitious next move. With blue belt in hand, he made the decisive choice to relocate approximately 2,700 kilometers from João Pessoa to São Paulo, driven by the desire to train under the best coaches Brazil had to offer.

Upon arriving in São Paulo, Helder Medeiros joined the academy of Demian Maia, while also working closely with Leonardo Vieira — widely known as Leozinho — at the team's headquarters. The organization, then called Master, later underwent a significant restructuring, eventually splitting into what became Brasa, TT, and Checkmat.

Training under Demian Maia proved transformative. Medeiros blossomed as a competitor during his colored belt years, claiming the IBJJF World Championship title at blue belt in 2003, purple belt in 2005, and brown belt in 2006 — a remarkable run of consistency at the sport's most prestigious annual event. He also captured CBJJO World Cup titles at each of those same belt levels, cementing his status as one of the most accomplished colored belt competitors of his generation.

Around 2005, as Demian Maia began shifting his focus toward mixed martial arts, both Maia and Leozinho recognized that Medeiros' competitive ambitions required a training environment more aligned with high-level grappling. Their recommendation led him to Ricardo Vieira — known as Rico — Leonardo Vieira's brother and the head of the team's Rio de Janeiro branch.

In Rio de Janeiro, Medeiros became an integral part of Ricardo's VB Project, a non-profit jiu-jitsu NGO renowned for developing competitive grappling talent. The program produced athletes such as Alan Finfou, Jackson Sousa, Bruno Matias, and Douglas Rufino, among many others. By the end of 2006, Medeiros received his black belt in a ceremony honoring all three of his principal mentors — Demian Maia, Leonardo Vieira, and Ricardo Vieira — a reflection of the collaborative role each had played in shaping his development.

Even while pursuing his competitive career, Helder Medeiros simultaneously invested in his identity as a coach. Returning to Paraíba, he founded his own school and established the first Checkmat affiliate in the region — a significant milestone for jiu-jitsu's presence in northeastern Brazil.

The school's impact became apparent quickly. Medeiros developed a coaching system that attracted and produced elite-level athletes, including Alexander Tráns, Antônio Júnior (known as "Cara de Sapato"), Tarcisio Jardim, Thiago Cavalcante, Jiddu Bastos, Marina Ribeiro, Felipe Miranda, João Luiz (known as "Petch"), Rulio Areda, Carlos Zau Augusto, and Ricardo Dutra. The caliber of competitors his program produced established his reputation as one of the more capable development coaches in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

As a black belt competitor during this same period, Medeiros continued to perform at a high level on the international circuit. He claimed the NNEBJJ North-Northeast Championship title in 2010 and won the IBJJF South American Championship in 2007. He also earned runner-up finishes at the IBJJF South American Championship in 2008, the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals NoGi in 2009, and the IBJJF European Open in 2010, along with a third-place finish at the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals NoGi in 2010.

Arrival in the UAE

In 2011, Helder Medeiros traveled to Abu Dhabi to compete at the Jiu-Jitsu World Pro tournament. The trip proved to be a turning point beyond competition — there he met Fabricio Moreira, an organizer connected to the local jiu-jitsu federation, who encouraged him to apply for a coaching vacancy in the country. After returning to Brazil, Medeiros submitted his application and was called to begin work in the United Arab Emirates in 2012.

His early responsibilities in the UAE spanned multiple roles, including leading a school at Abdulla Bin Rawaha and taking charge of Abu Dhabi's juvenile jiu-jitsu program. As his results accumulated and his reputation grew within the federation, Medeiros was elevated to lead the UAE Under-18 and Under-21 national squads. Under his guidance, those squads claimed world and Asian Games titles under the Jiu-Jitsu International Federation (JJIF), marking a defining high point in UAE youth grappling development.

Founding 'A Liga'

Alongside his national team responsibilities, Medeiros founded "A Liga" (The League), a high-performance workgroup designed specifically for elite black belts residing in the United Arab Emirates. The group brought together some of the most competitive names in the sport, including Jose Junior, Luanna Alzuguir, Marcio Andre, Alexander Tráns, Pedro Peres, Jiddu Bastos, Thiago Cavalcanti, Oscar Junior, and Samuel Canquerino, among others. A Liga reflected Medeiros' ambition to build a structured, elite-oriented training environment capable of competing with the top programs anywhere in the world.

Medeiros also served as head coach of the Baniyas Sports Club during his time in the UAE. The breadth of his work — spanning youth development, national team management, elite performance coaching, and club leadership — culminated in the founding of his own team, Halavanca Jiu-Jitsu, a project that encapsulates his coaching philosophy and the distinct identity he has forged across more than two decades on the mats.
