Gunnar Nelson

Born on July 28, 1988, in Iceland, Gunnar Nelson built his competitive instincts across multiple sports long before stepping onto a grappling mat. Ice hockey and football (soccer) formed the early pillars of his athletic development, cultivating the movement intelligence and competitive drive that would later translate naturally into combat sports. His entry into martial arts came through Karate in the Goju Ryu style — a discipline he took to with immediate conviction. By 16, Nelson had claimed three national juvenile kumite titles, an early indicator of a competitor who not only embraced pressure but thrived under it.

A deepening interest in mixed martial arts redirected his focus toward Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2005. The shift followed a pattern already well established in Nelson's athletic life: identify a discipline, commit to it completely, and ascend rapidly.

Nelson began his BJJ training in 2005 under Matt Thornton at SBG, earning his blue and purple belts within that system. Thornton's emphasis on technical structure and functional application gave Nelson the conceptual framework his game would grow from.

John Kavanagh, head coach of SBG Ireland and one of the most respected figures in European combat sports, awarded Nelson his brown belt. During this period, Nelson made regular training trips to New York to work with Renzo Gracie, whose lineage and technical depth left a clear imprint on his development. On September 30, 2009, Renzo Gracie awarded Nelson his black belt — just four years after he first took up the sport.

At 21 years old, Nelson became one of the youngest Europeans to earn a BJJ black belt. The milestone reflected both exceptional natural ability and the caliber of instruction he received across a genuinely multinational training path — from SBG to the Renzo Gracie association, with his team affiliation rooted in Mjölnir.

A Brown Belt Among the World's Elite

Before receiving his black belt, Nelson delivered one of the most striking performances of his early career at the ADCC 2009 World Championship, placing fourth in the open weight division. The result carried particular weight given the context: the ADCC is widely regarded as the most prestigious submission grappling event in the world, and Nelson achieved it competing as a brown belt against elite black belt opposition. Finishing fourth in the open weight bracket announced him as one of Europe's premier grapplers and drew international attention to a competitor with fewer than five years of BJJ training.

A Dominant Brown Belt Season

The ADCC finish was the centerpiece of an exceptional 2009 season. At the brown belt level, Nelson claimed gold at both the IBJJF Pan American Championship and the IBJJF New York Open Championship, while earning silver at the IBJJF World Championship and finishing second at the Scandinavian Open. The depth of that résumé confirmed that his ADCC performance was no anomaly — it was the output of a competitor already functioning at the highest level.

An Immediate Test at the Top

Nelson's transition into the black belt division was swift. Three days after receiving his black belt from Renzo Gracie on September 30, 2009, he stepped onto the mat at the IBJJF Pan American No-Gi Championship on October 3, 2009. Competing in the Men's Black Belt Open Weight division, he advanced to the final and earned a silver medal — a result ultimately decided by a coin toss, underscoring the razor-thin margins at the summit of the division.
