Gabriel Goulart

Gabriel Goulart was born on September 6, 1983, in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brazil. From an early age, he demonstrated a natural capacity for athletic competition, throwing himself into a wide variety of sports with uncommon dedication. Swimming was among his earliest pursuits, but it was futsal — Brazil's indoor 5-a-side variant of football — where he truly excelled, accumulating over 70 medals in competitive play and establishing himself as one of the standout youth athletes in his region.

At age 11, Goulart stepped away from futsal and redirected his energy into Capoeira, joining the renowned Abadá-Capoeira group. He trained until approximately age 16 or 17, a formative period that cultivated his movement intelligence, body awareness, and foundational athleticism. This diverse sporting background — spanning swimming, futsal, and Capoeira — built the physical and mental framework that would later define his approach to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Goulart's introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu came through the influence of his close friend Lucas Lepri, who went on to become the 2007 BJJ lightweight world champion. Lepri's enthusiasm for the sport proved contagious, and Goulart began training under his first coach, Elan Santiago, receiving both his blue and purple belts under Santiago's guidance.

A pivotal shift arrived in 2005 when Santiago relocated to South Korea. Rather than disrupting their development, the transition pushed both Goulart and Lepri into head instructor roles at their academy — a responsibility that accelerated their growth as competitors and coaches alike. In pursuit of higher-level training, the two traveled to São Paulo to work under Fernando Terere and Eduardo Telles at TT, an experience that brought new technical dimensions to Goulart's game.

Goulart subsequently deepened his ties to Alliance by training directly at Fabio Gurgel's Alliance headquarters in São Paulo — one of the most storied training environments in the history of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In 2008, he extended his development internationally by relocating to the United States, where he trained at the Alliance gym in Atlanta under Rubens Charles and Romero Jacaré. This period of elite international exposure sharpened his competitive edge and broadened his technical repertoire. He returned to Brazil and settled in São Paulo.

In 2010, Fabio Gurgel awarded Goulart his black belt — a promotion that followed directly from back-to-back World Championship titles at brown belt, cementing his place as one of the most accomplished athletes to emerge from the Alliance system.

Gabriel Goulart built one of the most consistent and decorated competition records of his generation, accumulating major titles from white belt through to brown belt. His trajectory reads as a story of sustained excellence across nearly a decade of high-level competition.

Blue Belt: Announcing a Contender

At blue belt, Goulart wasted no time establishing himself as a serious threat. He claimed the Brazilian National Championship in both 2004 and 2005 across both the weight and absolute divisions, and earned gold at the 2005 World Cup CBJJO in the blue belt division. His performances extended to the international stage as well — representing Brazil in the Desafio Brasil x EUA, he won the blue belt division in 2005, signaling his readiness for the challenges ahead.

Purple Belt: Accelerating Dominance

Moving into the purple belt division, Goulart's success accelerated sharply. He captured gold at the 2006 Pan American Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship and continued his Desafio Brasil x EUA dominance in 2006, winning both the weight and open weight divisions. At the World Championship, he claimed gold in 2007, then produced a defining performance in 2008 by sweeping both the weight category and the absolute — a demonstration of both technical depth and physical versatility.

Brown Belt: The Final Chapter Before Black

The brown belt stage brought the culmination of Goulart's colored belt journey. He won the World Championship at brown belt in 2009 and repeated the feat in 2010 — a back-to-back run that directly prompted Fabio Gurgel to promote him to black belt. His time training at Alliance Atlanta under Rubens Charles and Romero Jacaré contributed significantly to the competitive sharpening that powered this final dominant stretch, leaving Gabriel Goulart's colored belt legacy without question among the finest in Alliance history.
