Fabiana Borges

Fabiana Borges was born on June 26, 1988, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and grew up in Cascadura, a neighborhood that shaped both her character and her martial arts journey. Before finding her true calling in the arte suave, she experimented with soccer and volleyball without fully committing to either. At the age of 11, the opportunity to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu presented itself — and she seized it without hesitation.

Her introduction to BJJ came through a social project led by coach Fabiano Gaudio, a program specifically designed to support children from poorer communities in Rio de Janeiro. The project's mission extended well beyond the mats, instilling in participants a sense of citizenship, social responsibility, and personal development alongside rigorous BJJ instruction. That foundation gave Fabiana not only technical skills but also the discipline and values that would define her competitive career. The same program also produced Patrick Gaudio, who would go on to become one of the sport's most highly regarded prospects.

Fabiana's competitive career bore fruit almost immediately. As early as 2000 and 2001, she claimed back-to-back Brazilian National Championship titles at the yellow belt level, announcing the arrival of a formidable talent. Her ascent through the belt ranks continued without interruption — she won the Brazilian National Championship at blue belt in 2003 and captured World Championship gold at blue belt in 2004.

At purple belt, Fabiana reinforced her status as one of Brazil's premier competitors, sweeping both the Brazilian National title and the World Championship title in 2005. She carried that dominance forward into the brown belt division, winning consecutive Brazilian National Championships in 2006 and 2007. The 2007 title held particular significance: on the very day she claimed her sixth national title, Fabiano Gaudio promoted her to black belt. The simultaneous achievement of a national championship and the sport's highest rank stood as a powerful testament to years of dedication and relentless growth through the ranks.

Fabiana's transition to the international stage accelerated in 2008, when she traveled to the United States to compete at the No-Gi Pan American Championship. She won the tournament outright, demonstrating that her technical precision translated seamlessly to the no-gi format at the highest level. Following her victory, she accepted an invitation from her friend Miriam Cardoso, a BJJ coach based in Washington State, to extend her stay and continue competing in American tournaments.

What began as a short-term visit evolved into a longer commitment to building her international profile. In February 2010, Fabiana formally joined Gracie Barra's American team, gaining access to a more professionalized competitive environment and elite-level coaching infrastructure. Under the guidance of Marcio Feitosa, Gracie Barra's second in command, she continued to sharpen her black belt game.

Her results under the Gracie Barra banner validated the move. She won the Pan American Championship at black belt in both 2009 and 2010, cementing her reputation as one of the top competitors in the Pena division. At the 2010 IBJJF World Championship, she earned a silver medal at black belt — a result that placed her firmly among the global elite in her weight class and underscored the trajectory of a career built on consistency, technical mastery, and relentless competitive ambition.
