Hermes Franca

Hermes Franca was born on August 26, 1974, in Brazil, and began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training in 1994 at approximately 19 to 20 years of age. His early development on the mats unfolded in Brazil before a pivotal relocation set the course of his competitive and professional life.

In 2000, Franca moved to the United States on a tourist visa, working odd jobs while continuing to train and sharpen his grappling game. That same year, a standout performance at an IBJJF event in Orlando in November 2000 announced him to the wider American BJJ community. Competing at brown belt, he claimed first place in both the weight and absolute divisions — a double gold performance that drew immediate attention from established figures in the sport.

Among those paying close attention was Dan Lambert, whose notice of Franca's Orlando performance led to an invitation to join what would become American Top Team. Franca considers himself one of the early foundational figures of ATT, having been present during the formative period of a team that would go on to produce a significant roster of elite mixed martial arts competitors.

Franca's transition into mixed martial arts built steadily on his BJJ foundation. By April 2003, he had made his UFC debut carrying an undefeated 7–0 professional record, signaling to the lightweight division that a serious new contender had arrived.

WEC Championship and UFC Tenure

Before his UFC run fully took shape, Franca captured the WEC Lightweight Championship, establishing himself among the premier lightweights in the world at a time when the WEC carried genuine prestige in the 155-pound division. His UFC tenure featured notable victories over Spencer Fisher, Nate Diaz, and Jamie Varner — wins that underscored his legitimacy as a title-level threat.

UFC 73 Title Fight

On July 7, 2007, Franca challenged Sean Sherk for the UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC 73 in Sacramento, California. The title fight represented the apex of his MMA career and placed him on the sport's largest stage. In later years, Franca has spoken openly about lifestyle issues during his Las Vegas years that he believes negatively affected his career trajectory and in-cage performances during that period.

In May 2011, Hermes Franca was arrested and formally charged with the sexual assault of a 14-year-old. The gravity of the offense was reflected in the legal outcome: in January 2012, Franca was sentenced to 42 months in federal prison. The sentencing was reported on January 6 and 7, 2012 by multiple major sports and news outlets. Following the completion of his sentence, Franca was deported from the United States in 2014.

This chapter of Franca's history is presented with full transparency. The offense involved the sexual assault of a minor, and its severity is directly relevant to ongoing discussions about safeguarding, background checks, and eligibility standards within combat sports and BJJ specifically. In a 2025 interview, Franca stated that he had committed to sobriety since 2011 and publicly expressed remorse for his past actions. Those statements do not diminish the seriousness of the crime or its impact.

IBJJF Competition in Brazil

Following his deportation to Brazil in 2014, Franca eventually returned to competitive jiu-jitsu. Between 2019 and 2021, he competed in IBJJF events in Brazil under his black belt ranking. At the 2021 IBJJF Sul Americano, he represented Zero85 Jiu-Jitsu in the Master 4 Black Belt Medium-Heavy division and placed on the podium.

As of February 2026, Franca no longer appears on the IBJJF's certified black belt list. His participation in IBJJF events between 2019 and 2021 has drawn significant scrutiny in light of the federation's 2025 safeguarding statement, prompting calls from within the BJJ community for clearer, more consistent, and more enforceable eligibility standards across governing bodies.

Continued Multi-Organization Activity

His competitive activity extended beyond the IBJJF. Franca competed in UAEJJF season events during the 2023–2024 period and under the CBJJE banner in 2025, with participation recorded as recently as January 2026. His continued presence across multiple organizations reflects the absence of a unified eligibility standard capable of addressing his case with consistency.

Franca teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil under the brand Hermes Franca BJJ, maintaining an active presence on Instagram under that handle. His continued role as an instructor places him in a position of authority over students — a reality that sits at the center of unresolved questions about accountability within the global BJJ community.

Franca has expressed remorse for his past actions on multiple public occasions, including in a 2025 interview in which he also discussed his commitment to sobriety since 2011. While those expressions form part of the public record, his case continues to be referenced in broader conversations about the responsibilities BJJ federations, academies, and individual instructors bear toward athlete and student welfare — and whether existing safeguarding frameworks are adequate to address situations of this nature with consistency and rigor.
