Chris Moriarty

Born on January 14, 1984, in Columbus, Ohio, and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Chris Moriarty built his athletic identity in a city that would later become the backdrop for his most formative years as a martial artist. His relationship with combat sports began at age six, when he took up karate — a discipline that instilled the physical conditioning and mental focus he would carry into every chapter of his career.

In 2001, Moriarty discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu through Ed Kennedy, an introduction that fundamentally redirected his path. Recognizing the depth and complexity BJJ offered, he committed without hesitation. In January 2002, he joined Alliance Jiu Jitsu's Atlanta headquarters, stepping into an environment that would shape him into one of the team's most accomplished competitors of the decade.

From his first days on the mat at Alliance Jiu Jitsu, Moriarty trained under two of the sport's most respected figures: Romero Cavalcanti — widely known as "Jacaré" — and Jorge Gurgel. Jacaré's foundational philosophy combined with Gurgel's technical precision created an environment in which Moriarty developed rapidly and with purpose.

Earning Trust and a Nickname

By 2004 — just two years into his time at the Atlanta headquarters — Moriarty had earned the role of assistant instructor, a reflection of both his technical maturity and the trust his coaches placed in him. It was during this period that he acquired the nickname "Cabeção," a Portuguese term meaning "Big Head," which became a familiar part of his identity within the team.

Building a Competitive Legacy

Competing in the heavyweight division — Peso Pesado — Moriarty established himself as one of Alliance's most consistent competitive representatives throughout the 2000s, performing with distinction on both national and international stages. On December 20, 2008, Romero Cavalcanti promoted Moriarty to the rank of black belt, a formal recognition of a career built on discipline, consistency, and measurable achievement.

Moriarty's brown belt years represent the most prolific stretch of his competitive career, defined by sustained dominance against elite heavyweights across multiple organizations and rule sets.

Back-to-Back World Championships

The centerpiece of this era was his back-to-back gold medal run at the IBJJF World Championship, where Moriarty claimed the brown belt heavyweight title in both 2007 and 2008. Few competitors demonstrated that level of consistency at the world stage across consecutive years. His 2008 IBJJF Pan American Championship title further reinforced his standing as one of the most complete brown belts competing in the division at the time.

No-Gi Ambitions and Breadth of Competition

Moriarty's competitive appetite extended well beyond the gi. In 2006, he captured the ADCC North American Trials Championship, earning an invitation to the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship — one of the most coveted berths in all of grappling. That same year, he placed third at the CBJJO World Cup in both the weight and absolute divisions at brown belt, while also earning a third-place finish at the IBJJF World Championship. The 2006 season alone illustrated the scope of his ambitions, as he pursued excellence across multiple rule sets and organizations without sacrificing performance in any of them.

In 2007, at the height of his competitive trajectory, Moriarty suffered a broken ankle — a setback that proved to be a pivotal turning point beyond the sport itself. Rather than allowing the injury to define him, he used the recovery period to pursue a long-held aspiration: a career in medicine.

Balancing Two Demanding Vocations

The demands of medical school and residency inevitably reduced the volume of his competitive activity following his black belt promotion in December 2008. Yet Moriarty never fully stepped away from the sport that shaped him. In 2016, he demonstrated his competitive edge remained sharp by winning the 2016 IBJJF Atlanta Winter Open — a performance that spoke to his ability to rise to the occasion despite years of reduced mat time.

Throughout his medical training and beyond, Moriarty maintained an active presence as a BJJ instructor, balancing two deeply demanding vocations with the same disciplined approach that defined his competitive years.
